Postdoctoral Appointee - Quantum Materials Lab

Argonne

Job Description

The Quantum Materials Lab working within Q-NEXT, the Center for Molecular Engineering, the Materials Science Division (MSD) at Argonne National Lab (ANL) is looking for a joint experimental postdoctoral candidate for novel research exploring optically active point defects in wide-bandgap semiconductors. A successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team of scientists within Q-NEXT and the MSD QIS Group lead by David Awschalom at ANL and the University of Chicago (UChicago) conducting a wide range of research on optically active point defects in solid-state host materials, quantum optics, solid-state spins, quantum emitters, quantum memory, quantum transduction and quantum interconnects.

The candidate will develop advanced optical measurements for spin manipulation and explore central spin and spin bath phenomena (i.e. noise spectroscopy) in combination with growth synthesis efforts, and explore mechanisms to link disparate spin systems via photons, phonons, and magnons for hybrid quantum approaches.  The candidate will primarily be responsible for designing, building, and operating confocal microscopy experiments studying defects in quantum materials.  The candidate is expected to seek collaborations with other scientists within Q-NEXT and  MSD, and UChicago and Argonne more broadly, as well as mentor graduate students from the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering and Center for Molecular Engineering at UChicago and Argonne respectively.

The candidate is expected to publish results in a refereed journal and make oral presentations at meetings, conferences, symposia, and seminars.  They are expected to maintain a knowledge of the latest developments in the field and related groups through interactions and collaborative efforts.  The candidate will also participate in maintaining technical reports and other documents associated with the operation of the quantum materials labs, along with reports on experimental progress, technical developments, and new initiatives to peer reviews and program managers.
