Requires: 3-5 years of non-profit development experience, fundraising success, knowledge/network in northern NJ governmental and philanthropic communities preferred.

Our client is an accredited nonprofit human services organization that has been providing vital services to northern New Jersey communities for more than 100 years. The organization seeks an experienced Director of Development to manage and support its fundraising efforts and build its visibility and impact in the region.

The Vice President of Development oversees the department’s “resource development” program, working with all members of the team to build and steward gifts of $1,000 or more. Also responsible for developing a Leadership Giving circle of donors at the $10,000 and above level and identifying, researching, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors and prospects capable of such gifts.

In particular, the Vice President will be responsible for stewarding existing relationships and identifying, initiating introductions, and building new relationships with top prospective foundations, government agencies, corporations, and individual donors.

Responsibilities of the Vice President of Development:

  • Takes a leadership role in identifying, researching, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual major gift prospects and donors ($1,000 and above).
  • Responsible for either directly soliciting or coordinating solicitations by others that generate leadership gifts ($10,000 of more) from individuals.
  • Explores new opportunities for the engagement of individuals to grow the number of new leadership giving donors and use moves management strategies to increase giving by existing donors.
  • Supports the President & CEO in establishing and maintaining relationships with potentials and current donors.
  • Develops strategies to engage current leadership donors and volunteers in the cultivation and solicitation process.
  • Supervises and participates in the scheduling and arrangement of on-site and off-site meetings, luncheons, tours, visits, including recognition events, etc. with major donors and prospects and coordinates the participation of agency staff, leadership, trustees and volunteers.
  • Prepares and directs the preparation of major gift proposals, solicitation letters, and other cultivation materials and stewardship information for major gift prospects and donors.
  • Develops annual stewardship plans for donors $1,000 and above.
  • Develops annual work plan and schedule of fund-raising priorities, goals and objectives in consultation to grow revenue from major gifts in line with the agency’s Strategic Plan and annual Development Plans.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications of the Vice President of Development:

  • 3-5 years of progressive non-profit development experience, success in securing major contributions from a variety of sources
  • Extensive working knowledge of general fundraising practices and procedures; CFRE a plus
  • Extensive knowledge of and connections in northern New Jersey governmental and philanthropic communities is a plus
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to clearly communicate information both written and oral, public speaking/presentation skills
  • Experience with grant proposals and reporting
  • Experience with event planning
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and fundraising software
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Organized and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Work well independently and as part of a team
  • Able to thrive in a dynamic human services environment while working on several projects simultaneously

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $125,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year
