Robotics and AI Integration for Geoscience Exploration Postdoc

Come join the Energy Geosciences Division (EGD) at Berkeley Lab as a Postdoctoral Fellow and contribute to exciting research at the intersection of robotics and geoscience! We are seeking a talented individual with strong instrument and experimental skills in robotic exploration system technologies, specifically in the integration of AI/ML algorithms with hardware systems for geoscience applications.

What You Will Do:

  • Design, prototype, and test robotics based, such as drones, system with custom geophysical and other sensor pay load.
  • Develop and utilize AI/ML algorithms integrated with the robotic systems. 
  • Conduct experiments and field trails to test the functionalities of the robotic systems.
  • Conduct and lead field surveying campaigns of robotic surveys for geoscience and engineering applications.
  • Develop specifications, test procedures for the robotic systems.
  • Develop and document algorithm and software for calibration, processing, and broadcasting data collected from the robotic systems.
  • Work collaboratively with a diverse group of team members with expertise in geophysics, civil engineering and other earth science fields.
  • Author peer-reviewed conference or journal papers, and contribute to grant proposals.

 

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in robotics system design, Electrical Engineering, mechanic engineering or other related disciplines.
  • Strong and demonstrated skills in robotic system design, embedded AI/ML algorithms.
  •  Demonstrated capability in hands-on laboratory ad field work with robotic systems.
  • Expertise in Robotic platform automation and data processing.
  • Knowledge of geoscience and infrastructure topics.
  • Demonstrated experience developing operating procures and survey designs.
  • Experience identifying, qualifying, and managing contract manufacturers for robotic assemblies.
  • Collaborative spirits for working in a diverse team
  • Familiarity with geophysical methods and geophysical surveys.
  • Familiarity with oil and gas infrastructures.
  • Familiarity with remote sensing approaches and applications
  • Demonstrated record of publications or conference presentations.
  • Interest in collaborative research and open science.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $5,000 - $7,010 and is expected to start at $6,476 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
