Essential Job Duties

The Program Director of Teaching Programs will contribute to a highly productive and thriving team in our Graduate School that provides professional development for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars who wish to pursue a career in academia. This position reports to the Assistant Dean for Professional Development in The Graduate School. The Program Director of Teaching Programs will enhance the current co-curricular content, create new programming content, assist with the workflow of the Professional Development Team, and provide guidance to those wishing to pursue a faculty career. The Program Director of Teaching Programs will collaborate with Professional Development team members to ensure that the competencies of career and self-development, leadership and management, teamwork and collaboration, oral and written communication, and effectiveness and well-being are being developed through an array of programmatic offerings.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Serve as the main expert on the development of teaching skills and other proficiencies associated with a faculty career in academia (i.e., mentoring, leading labs, project management, etc.).
  • Design and deliver co-curricular workshops, seminars, and cohort programs that focus on teaching and the other competencies listed above.
  • Remain up-to-date with current theory and evidence-based best practices in teaching and learning.
  • Oversee and evaluate the new Teaching Assistants (TA) Workshop and other events that focus on equipping graduate and postdoctoral trainees across disciplines with key academic and professional communication skills.
  • Administer and manage any certificates related to teaching and/or careers in academia which includes but is not limited to evaluation of participants’ progress, evaluation of the programmatic offerings, evaluating participants’ portfolios, and managing all other aspects of the certificate(s).
  • Actively contribute to the vision and mission of the Professional Development team.
  • Be accountable for the workflows associated with being a member of the Professional Development team such as regular attendance at staff and one-on-one meetings, building programming schedules on a semester basis, assisting with team-wide events, ensuring efficient evaluation of programs, updating curricula to reflect current research, and other responsibilities associated with being a member of the Professional Development team.
  • Providing informal consultation and mentoring to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars who seek additional guidance outside of the professional development programs offered.
  • Ensure that programs developed and delivered are designed with inclusive material and promote a sense of equity, belonging and community among participants.
  • Contribute to the Professional Development team’s efforts to maximize the visibility of programs, certificates, and other initiatives through marketing campaigns, outreach, campus partnerships, and creation of deliverables.
  • Serve as a campus resource for the NC State instructional community and provide support to those seeking to design, deliver and assess quality learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with campus partners such as DELTA, the Office for Faculty Excellence, and individual colleges and departments to promote the professional growth of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.
  • Contribute to the field of educational development at the national level.
  • Stay professionally active by presenting at academic conferences, representing NC State on the leadership of professional organizations, and/or publishing.

Other Work/Responsibilities include:
  • Assist with the Graduate School’s orientations, 3-Minute Thesis competition and other broad efforts to support the graduate student community as needed.
  • Work with the Assistant Dean for Professional Development on initiatives and grant-funded projects that support the professional development of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean for Professional Development.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Require post-baccalaureate credentials and significant teaching training and/or experience.
  • Alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with diverse individuals on a variety of issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; engaging presentation skills.
  • Effective initiative, excellent judgment, and an ability to independently function in an efficient manner.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with a team and through partnerships both within and outside of the Graduate School; experience planning and working cooperatively on shared projects to achieve agreed-upon goals and results.
  • Knowledge of graduate education and the career support needs of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, including career opportunities across an array of fields and work environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing, implementing and assessing courses and/or training programs.
  • Commitment to inclusive teaching methods.
  • Understanding of and ease with applying active learning techniques.
  • Teaching experience (broadly conceived).
  • Experience and/or demonstrated interest in issues related to graduate student and postdoc well-being.
  • Experience with large-scale event planning.
