The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) is an inter-institutional research center administered by North Carolina State University. Located within the University’s visionary Centennial Campus, ITRE conducts surface, water, and air transportation research, while providing professional training and educational opportunities. The Institute serves all 16 statewide campuses in the University of North Carolina (UNC) system and partners with transportation professionals around the globe.
The University of North Carolina, Office of the President, designated ITRE in a Memorandum of Understanding to work in partnership with the Technical University of Lisbon in the area of Transportation and Environment. ITRE became a member of the North Carolina Transportation Consortium in 2002, and was the lead institute for the Southeastern Transportation Center (a USDOT University Transportation Center) from 1989-1995.

Essential Job Duties
The Operations Research and Education Laboratory (OREd) at the Institute for Transportation Research and Education scientifically addresses critical school planning issues. Using evidence-based approaches, OREd creates district membership projections, determines the location of new school sites, designs new attendance boundaries, and examines demographic balance.
Research Assistant will use GIS and basic cartographic design principles to analyze complex school planning-related datasets that are then communicated to the client. Day-to-day activities may include working closely with school district staff, county and municipal planners, and other ITRE staff to better quantify growth factors that will affect school district enrollment in the long term.

- Lead interviews with local municipal and county planners
- Collect and manage GIS data related to local residential development, US Census, and/or other data
- Participate in presentations to policymakers about the implications of development trends on local school districts
Other Responsibilities
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Relevant Master’s Degree, or relevant Bachelor’s Degree plus three years of professional experience.
Other Required Qualifications
- A planning background with a working knowledge of the State’s geographic and socio-political makeup.
- Ability to prepare and analyze large datasets and communicate results in a professional and clear manner to clients.
- Ability to work with large datasets (>50,000 records) Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint Ability to work independently
- Ability to communicate well with project team members and project clients
- Technical and personal skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of and experience with, public transportation operations and planning
- Public speaking experience
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
Valid NC Driver's License required
