Conduct independent research activities under the guidance of a facultymentor in preparation for a full time academic or research career.


Work Performed

DEFINITION:The Postdo ctoral Appointee holds a PhD or equivalent doctorate (e.g.ScD, MD, DVM). Candidates with non-US degrees may be required toprovide proof of degr ee equivalency.1. A candidate may also be appointed to a postdoctoral po sition if thecandidate has completed all of the requirements for a degre ebut thedegree has not been formally conferred: in this case, the candi date maypresent evidence of completion of the degree requirements, toget her witha statement documenting the date on which the degree is to be co nferred.If the degree is not conferred by this projected date, the postd octoralappointment may be terminated.2. Note for international candidate s: Generally,immigrationclassifications(e.g., H-1B, J-1, etc.) require that the requisitedegree be conferred before a petition can be filed or a visa documentissued to sponsor the individual.The term of the appoint ment is limited (see Section 5 of the PostdocPolicy for length of appoin tment).The appointment involves substantially full-time research orschol arship, and may include teaching responsibilities.The appointment is gen erally preparatory for a full time academic orresearch career.The appoin tment is not part of a clinical training program, unlessresearch trainin g under the supervision of a senior mentor is theprimary purpose of the appointment.The Postdoctoral Appointee functions under the supervision o f a mentoror a department at Duke University.The Postdoctoral Appointee is expected to publish the results of his orher research or scholarship during the period of the appointment.EXPECTATION:The conscientious disch arge of research or scholarship responsibilities,which may include teach ing responsibilities for Postdoctoral AssociatesConformance to standards of responsible conduct in researchCompliance with good scholarly and re searchpracticeMaintenance of a laboratory notebook and/or other compara ble records ofresearch activity, which remains the property of Duke Univ ersity uponterminationAdherence to University standards regarding use of isotopes, chemicals,infectious agents, animals, human subjects, and the likeOpen and timely discussion with the mentor regarding all facets of thePostdoctoral Appointee's research activities. Postdoctoral Appointee sare encouraged to consult the AAMC Compact Between PostdoctoralAppointe es and Their Mentors for suggested guidelines for thePostdoctoral Appoin tee-mentor relationshipPrompt disclosure to the mentor regarding the pos session and desire todistribute materials, reagents, software, copyright able and potentiallypatentable discoveries derived from the Postdoctoral Appointee'sresearch.Collegial conduct towards members of the research g roup and others asdescribed in the Duke University School of Medicine Ho nor Code ofProfessional Conduct and other relevant conduct policies pert aining toother schools at Duke University.Compliance with all applicable University and departmental policies andprocedures.
