Full Job Description

Meritus Health and the proposed Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine (MSOM) is seeking a highly motivated individual to lead diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts for our teams. Meritus Health is committed to making a difference internally and externally in our community and constantly strives to embed a culture of diversity in all aspects of operations. The position will be integral to the health system and MSOM with the goal of delivering the highest quality experience for our patients, our students, faculty, staff and leaders.

The position will represent and serve to include, become accessible, create a culture of belonging and inclusion for all internal and external stakeholders and provide visionary leadership. The position is for Meritus Health, which includes Meritus Medical Center and the delivery system and the proposed Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine.

The ideal candidate would have a proven track record of success for engagement in multiple areas with hospital systems, practices, community projects and/or academic committees. Experience working with a non-profit is preferred. Diversity practitioner certification is preferred.

Reporting to President and CEO of Meritus Health and President of MSOM.

Essential Duties of the Position:

  • Identify, build and maintain relationships within the Meritus health care organization by working with the team to educate and guide hospital and member services.
  • Work within the academic institution to maintain a diverse student body and workforce by serving as an advisor on the admission committee and attending admission committee meetings.
  • Promote cultural competence in the entire Meritus Health organization by leading change in the organization. Regularly facilitate group discussions in a CME format for Meritus Health. Recruit speakers and manage agreements for these events.
  • Create and Chair a committee on DEI within Meritus Medical Center, the residency programs and MSOM whose mission includes belonging and justice.
  • Review opportunities for integration of DEI curriculum in the interprofessional curriculum of MSOM.
  • Develop and implement a strategic and annual operating plan for DEI plan across Meritus Health and MSOM.
  • Conduct a variety of trainings in the DEI space, such as unconscious bias training and cultural competence.
  • Review opportunities for DEI integration in research at Meritus Health, Inc., the residency program and MSOM by serving on the research committee
  • Participate in onboarding faculty for MSOM by providing training that aids in creating a culture of safety.
  • Serve on the student progress committee for MSOM as a non-voting advisor
  • Conduct organization wide audits and identify strategies to achieve Affirmative action goals.
  • Work with MSOM student affairs team to mentor students for excellence and inclusion by creating a focus group of students to advise on changes in culture, curriculum or service activities
  • Title IX and ADA coordination oversight, with regular training on issues of discrimination, harassment, diversity, equity and inclusion for faculty given on a quarterly basis in curriculum committee
  • Physicians in this role will still be able to, and encouraged to, maintain clinical practice for seeing patients for up to 40% of their time.

  • If you like to sit and think big thoughts and ideas and not execute, then this is not a position for you.
  • If you are passionate about DEI, but don’t have much experience in training and implementation, then this is not a position for you.
  • If you want to lead and manage meaningful change as it relates to health equity, social determinants of health, diversity, inclusion and justice, then this may be a fit for you.

Education - Physician qualification highly preferred, but not necessary

Experience - 5+ years experience in academic setting or medical school highly desired

Licensure/Certification:

Diversity certification preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • The ideal candidate would have a proven track record of success for execution in multiple areas with hospital systems, practices, community projects and/or academic committees.
  • Experience working with a non-profit is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others
  • Exceptional ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Effective proof reading, editing and presenting skills
  • Previous experience with volunteer committees required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Access
