Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Associate II for the Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics within the New Jersey Medical School. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate II will perform structure-function studies of bacterial regulatory proteins. In addition the Research Associate II will collect data; prepare reports for peer-reviewed scientific publications and conference presentations; and contribute to grant writing and figure preparation.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Performs molecular biology, structural biology, X-ray crystallographic, cryo-EM, and genetic research independently or as assigned, relating to bacterial protein structure-function, followed by appropriate reports, recommendations and conclusions.
  • Determining the 3-dimensional structures of proteins, protein-protein, and protein-small molecule complexes using X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM,.
  • Perform protein expression and purification – overexpression using bacterial systems, SDS-PAGE, western blotting, co-immunoprecipitation, and chromatographic separation using FPLC.
  • Perform protein characterization – using circular dichroism, surface plasmon resonance (Biacore), microscale thermophoresis, and isothermal titration calorimetry.
  • Perform RNA/DNA isolation, expression vector design and construction, PCR, site-directed mutagenesis, and enzymatic assay development for medium- and high-throughput screening.
  • Generates, compiles and presents statistical data with appropriate conclusions, recommendations, etc. pertinent to research activity.
  • Support the daily operations within the lab, e.g., lab reagent generation and administrative tasks

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry and Structural Biology or equivalent in a relevant science during which a minimum of four (4) years of related research experience was performed.
  • Minimum of two years postdoctoral experience.
  • Experience with purifying and crystallizing proteins.
  • Experience determining X-ray crystal structures and collecting X-ray diffraction data at synchrotrons.

  • Good communication and organization skills are important for this position.
