Job Description

RESEARCH SPECIALIST, Chemistry-Instrumentation Facility (DCIF), to provide comprehensive NMR support in the DCIF, including user training and chemical problem-solving, with specialized pulse sequence development and theoretical calculations as needed; routine support for a subset of mass spectrometry and chromatography instruments; and maintaining and improving the current DCIF electronic data archive and billing procedures.  Will assist with maintenance and improvements to DCIF NMR spectrometers, including pulse sequence development, implementation of shaped pulses, and various gradient-enhanced acquisition methods; train and support graduate student stewards to develop their analytical and instrumentation skills; support mass spectrometry and chromatography capabilities, including back-up support when the primary research scientist is unavailable; work with DCIF users to develop analytical methods in support of their research, including help with difficult small molecule structure determinations; assist with multidimensional NMR assignment strategies; develop and maintain the lab’s existing Linux automation infrastructure, including support for data archiving, reservations, and billing functions; train users on the finer points of NMR data analysis with Mestrenova and Topspin software; assist staff with improving NMR data acquisition; and provide guidance to graduate students and post-docs to refine NMR techniques. 

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  chemistry background and experience with complete small molecule structure determination; ability to interact effectively with faculty/students/researchers with diverse needs and interests; strong interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and verbal and written communication skills; and ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a team member.  PREFERRED:  Ph.D. in chemistry/closely related field; experience with basic instrumentation and applied NMR methods; well-developed mass spectrometry and chromatography skills; ability to troubleshoot instrumental problems; and experience with bioanalytical chemistry and NMR in structural biology.  Job #22506
