Description
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher at Oregon State University in cooperation with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Bureau of Land Management to synthesize long-term greater sage-grouse demographic and habitat data into a regional integrated population model designed to evaluate the impacts of large-scale landscape disturbance on sage-grouse population change. This position includes 1 year of funding at $4707-4966/month (depending on experience) plus basic medical coverage, with the potential for renewal for a 2nd year given satisfactory work performance. The study will focus on two primary objectives: (1) response of sage-grouse demographics and (2) habitat selection (or movements) to catastrophic wildfire and juniper throughout the Great Basin. Within this framework the researcher will be encouraged to develop innovative research using large, existing longitudinal datasets on female sage-grouse on one study area that experienced a mega-wildfire 2012-2023 and another that has undergone juniper removal from 2009-2022. The researcher will also be responsible for assisting with management of ongoing demographic data collection on GPS-PTT marked sage-grouse on these study areas. Start date is negotiable but candidates that can start July 2023 are preferred.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in wildlife biology, vertebrate ecology or closely related field; field experience with wildlife studies in extremely remote, rugged terrain under inclement weather; ability to interact with the public on controversial issues; and a strong interest or experience in landscape ecology or spatial ecology. Preference will be given to applicants with strong quantitative skills, particularly modeling of vital rates, population dynamics, and/or habitat use, selection or movements, and experience collecting field data on avian species in remote locations. Send cover letter, resume, and copies of academic records (unofficial transcripts are fine) in a SINGLE PDF file to Drs. Christian Hagen (Christian.hagen@oregonstate.edu) AND Katie Dugger (Katie.Dugger@oregonstate.edu). Position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.
