Summary

The University of Michigan, regionally and nationally known for its commitment to providing high quality, family-centered patient care seeks bachelors prepared Graduate Nurses for our Adult Emergency Services Internship program, starting June 19, 2023. The UM Adult ED is a Level 1 Trauma Center with over 80,000 visits per year, providing a fast paced and exciting work environment. Our nurses serve as integral members of a multidisciplinary team providing care for adult patients in a variety of treatment areas. 

This is a four (4) to six (6) month internship program which prepares Graduate Nurses for a Registered Nurse position in the Emergency Department. Orientation includes a combination of classroom and precepted clinical experience. A two (2) year commitment to the department is required after completion of orientation program. The initial four (4) to six (6) months will rotate day, evening, and night shifts. Shift assignment will occur after successful completion of internship.  During the Internship, the candidate will have a 5% pay rate deduction until completion of the orientation program.

Salary range for Registered Nurses  $36.10-$55.99 / hour

  • Please note that Internship programs will take a 5% reduction in the hourly rate until orientation is completed.
  • Evening Shift Differential- $3.00 per hour
  • Night Shift Differential- $4.00 per hour
  • Weekend Differential- $2.90 per hour
  • Charge Nurse Differential- $1.00 per hour

Nursing Specific Info

Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C.
Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.

Graduate Nurse Internship positions will take a 5% reduction in the payrate until completion of Orientation.

Required Qualifications*

  • The candidate must be a Graduate Nurse or newly licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan, who has not yet practiced as a Registered Nurse. 
  • Candidate must have successfully completed an accredited BSN or ADN nursing program 
  • Successful completion of NCLEX must occur no later than 45 days from the individuals start date.
  • Successful candidate must obtain ACLS during orientation, and obtain Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification within 6 months post orientation to maintain position. These can be obtained through UMHS Emergency Department.
  • Must be available to start Internship on June 19, 2023.

NOTE: In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

Desired Qualifications*

  • BSN
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills are desired.
  • Experience in an Emergency Department, ICU, or as a Paramedic is desired.
  • Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher is preferred

Work Schedule

Hours Per Week: 40 hrs, 8 & 12 hr variable shifts
Shift/Hrs/Days: Permanent shift to be determined at the end of the Internship
Location: Adult Emergency Department, Graduate Nurse Internship

All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
