Responsibilities*

  • Provide direct nursing care to all patient populations as a Core OB Resource unit RN (L&D, postpartum-newborn, OR, PACU, antepartum, triage; general and moderate care level of nursing care.
  • Identify and assess the orientation, continuing education, inservice and developmental needs of the unit nursing staff. 
  • Investigate, design, evaluate and modify as necessary unit orientation, inservice and continuing education programs in collaboration with the VVWH leadership team. 
  • Conduct individual and group educational programs for unit nursing staff. 
  • Assist in the design, implementation and evaluation of hospital-wide orientation, inservice education and staff development programs. 
  • Provide consultation in the area of clinical and educational expertise to nursing staff. 
  • In collaboration with the unit leadership team and Unit-based Committee, assist in the annual development of nursing competency requirements, coordinate VVWH blitz, and oversee completion and maintenance of records/documentation.  
  • Oversee VVWH orientation program, including scheduling, preceptor training and development, orientee performance feedback, completion and maintenance of orientation records/documentation, etc. 
  • Represent the VVWH on unit, nursing and hospital-wide committees. 
  • Participate in the unit quality improvement plan; perform audits and coaching related to QI initiatives.
  • Implement all responsibilities to all VVWH units (Labor & Delivery, High Risk, Postpartum, and Core) and to all VVWH clinical staff (RN, Patient Care Tech, and Surgical Tech).
  • Ability to promote the VVWH values to empower each other to interrupt or disrupt disrespect; practice communication that is beneficial, kind and true; inspire and be inspired by our colleagues’ worth, significance and integrity; cultivate respect for ourselves and others routinely, publicly and privately.

  • Night Shift Weekend Differential- $5.15 / hour

Required Qualifications*

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan; 
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or an equivalent combination of education and experience; 
  • Four (4) or more years R.N. experience
  • Current classroom experience (within the past 2 years)
  • Demonstrated current clinical expertise in the nursing care of normal and high-risk perinatal patient, including perioperative and neonatal care; 
  • Current or ability to obtain specialty certification within 1 year (EFM, RNC- OB, MNN)
  • Successful completion of the AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course; 
  • Ability to successfully complete the AWHONN Fetal Monitoring and AHA Neonatal Resuscitation Instructor Courses within 9-12 months; 
  • Ability to successfully complete STABLE course within 12 months

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's Degree in Nursing preferred; 
  • Successful completion of the AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring Course.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement and evaluate educational/orientation programs within prescribed timelines; 
  • Demonstrated knowledge/skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point programs; 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of UMHS policies, procedures and practices.
  • Demonstrated outstanding interpersonal skills, excellent problem-solving skills, ability to provide direct and effective feedback, and effective conflict resolution skills; 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with multiple individuals/disciplines while effectively advocating for patient care needs/wishes; 
  • Demonstrated flexibility in work days/hours. 
  • Demonstrated increased responsibility in patient care leadership aeb involvement in unit committees/councils/projects/precepting, etc. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, to both individuals and groups; 
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate change, direct nursing practice, and evaluate outcomes; 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an independent, self-directed manner that achieves reliable outcomes within pre-determined timelines; 
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission/vision and values of UMHS and the VVWH. 

Work Schedule

Hours: 40 hours per week (20% productive; 80% non-productive)Shift: Day shift with the flexibility to meet the needs of the unit on off shift; May require on-call and weekends per collective bargaining agreement.Location: Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census. 

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
