Energy Storage Postdoc

Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Advanced Light Source (ALS) Division has an opening for an Energy Storage Postdoc to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will participate in collaborative research at the ALS together with Principal Investigators (PI) from the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR) and Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) in performing synchrotron experimental study of energy-storage materials and electrochemical processes, with emphasis on the use of soft x-ray core-level spectroscopy for studying electronic structure of solid/electrolyte interface for multivalent-ion battery materials and microelectronic devices.

The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 14,000 users annually. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our team!

What You Will Do:

  • Participate in performing forefront research in synchrotron experimental study of energy-storage materials, with emphasis on the use of in-situ/operando soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering (RIXS) techniques for studying electronic structure of multivalent-ion battery materials and microelectronic devices.
  • Communicate with the JCESR and EFRC PIs for the XAS and RIXS experimental planning and preparation, data acquisition and data analysis.
  • Provide support for the experimental program including: operation of beamlines 7.3.1 and 8.0.1 the associated endstations.
  • Adherence to environment, safety, and health policies and procedures; assisting the equipment maintenance of BL7.3.1 endstation, wet-RIXS endstation (BL8.0.1.4) .
  • Collaborate with the scientists, engineers and technical support staff at the ALS to perform planned experiments.
  • Disseminate experimental and research results via publications in refereed journals; present results via oral presentations at scientific meetings, conferences and peer reviews.
  • Commitment to safe working practices. Ensure that self and beamline users are trained in accordance with relevant ES&H regulations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and implement applicable policies and regulations, including LBNL and ALS Conduct of Operations and Quality Assurance policies and procedures.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, or Materials Science, or other related physical science discipline.
  • Experience with synchrotron radiation techniques applied to the study of electronic properties of materials.
  • Knowledge of electrochemistry and/or microelectronics as well as a thorough understanding of modern instrumentation techniques applied to these areas.
  • Must be independent, innovative and able to carry through an experiment from initiation to meaningful conclusion in collaboration with a team of technical support staff, postdocs, and students.
  • Demonstrated experience to pursue new areas of microelectronic devices and energy storage research involving sophisticated instrumentation including ultra high vacuum, photons and charged particle detection.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • The monthly salary range for this position is $5,000.00 - $7,747.00 and is expected to start at $6,624.00 - $7,747.00 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
