Job Description:

Field, Laboratory, Greenhouse, and Growth Chamber Research

  • In collaboration with supervisor, help design and execute vegetable and fruit production, irrigation, nutrition, and plant physiology, and genetics experiments in the field, greenhouse, growth chamber, and laboratory. Experiments may involve nutrient/carbohydrate analyses, plant growth measurements, plant propagation, care and maintenance of ized plants.
  • Modify methods/techniques from the literature to fit current research purposes.
  • Data entry, statistical analysis, and interpretation.
  • Preparation of written reports of research, EDIS, and journal manuscripts for publication.

Managing Field, Laboratory, Greenhouse, and Growth Chamber Research Operations

Supervise and assist graduate students, postdoctoral associates, and visiting scientists in laboratory safety protocols, assist with training of personnel in proper laboratory operations and research procedures.  Assist in training on proper use of laboratory equipment.

Train, and supervise OPS and Work Study personnel.

Maintain and fix instruments, equipment such as discrete analyzer and sensor operation, order research materials and reagents, perform university-mandated surveys and paperwork, monitor, and supervise safety compliance, and other organizational duties.


 
Expected Salary:

$50,112.00/yr 

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.

This position requires certification for handling isotopes and limited pesticide application. Training will be provided.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years of basic laboratory experience (wet-lab chemistry) preferred.

Familiar with photosynthesis, nutrient flux kinetics, irrigation, and fertigation.

Must be able to work harmoniously with peers, students, and research staff; make keen and insightful observations of crop health and accurately report observations.

Proficiency is required in computer-based data analysis with SAS or related software, and word processing and spreadsheet applications.

Effective oral and written communication skills are essential.

Instrument operation and maintenance skills are required for discrete analyzer, sensors, dataloggers, ICP, AAS, IC, CO2 , and O2 gas analyzers.

A general knowledge of electro-chemical, statistical, and biological sciences is essential.

Knowledge of and experience with vegetable and fruit production is desirable. Awareness of specialty crops.
