Essential Job Duties

The Outreach Specialist is a member of the staff of North Carolina Cooperative Extension (NCCE) and an important part of our team because it is often the first person the public and community partners interact with when calling our office or entering our facility. The primary responsibility is to provide administrative support to the County Extension office. The Outreach Specialist cooperates with colleagues in the NCCE and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities.

The Outreach Specialist helps our Extension office connect with the public and our partners by greeting visitors to the building, answering the phones, and responding to general information inquiries. The Outreach Specialist also maintains records pertaining to community partners and ensures that community partners receive our department’s newsletters and event notifications. Our office hosts a variety of trainings and events throughout the year led by Extension Agents, Program Assistants, and Volunteers, and the Outreach Specialist assists with event registration and implementation as needed, including preparing and organizing paper and electronic materials, and updating electronic and physical signage throughout the building.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

The NC Cooperative Extension – Guilford County Center provides education and capacity-building work in the areas of 4-H youth development, agriculture, food, health, livestock, and commercial and consumer horticulture. Our building and grounds host activities and events throughout the year for youth and adults and we have a vibrant community garden and demonstration garden on site.

The primary responsibility is to provide administrative support to the County Extension office. The Outreach Specialist cooperates with colleagues in the NCCE and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities.

Compiles and sorts information from a variety of sources, coordinating room reservations for the building, assisting Extension Agents and Program Assistants in preparing for programs, preparing and disseminating email newsletters, and updating electronic and physical bulletin boards in the building. This position is public-facing and requires the use of good judgment and discretion.

Minimum Experience/Education

Graduation from high school and two years office assistance and secretarial experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Department Required Skills

Computer skills are necessary and applicants should possess skills in Microsoft Office and Google Suite. Experience with Canva and Active Campaign would be helpful.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Two years’ experience working with the public

Ability to convey information orally and in written form to individuals or groups to ensure they understand the message. Ability to listen and respond appropriately to information from others.

Experience organizing, updating, and distributing electronic and print materials.

Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish).
