Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Executive Director, Building Services and Landscape Maintenance is a member of the Division of Administration’s leadership team and FM’s Senior Team.

The role oversees approximately 350 employees, representing three units: Building Services, Landscape and Arboretum/Horticultural Services, and Administrative/Solid Waste Services.

Responsible for strategic planning and resource allocation activities that affect the department regarding internal and external competition and customer satisfaction. Deploys and oversees hardscape projects and contract work valued at approximately $3.0M annually. Advises and coordinates with management staff on employee evaluations and development, operational and organizational planning, and staffing and resource issues.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree required. General business management or related discipline is strongly preferred, although other disciplines coupled with relevant experience could substitute. Without a business or related degree, any degree with an equivalent combination of experience and training providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be a sufficient substitute.
Experience:
  • Minimum of fifteen years experience in program planning, budgeting, and knowledge of landscape services and custodial operations with a concentration in facilities operations staffing and management.
  • A minimum of 8 years of supervisory experience is also required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of business operations, including planning, budgeting, computer skills, and personnel management techniques. Incumbents must manage others and maintain an organization that is competitive in the industry and has a strong customer service orientation.
  • Knowledge of custodial, special events, moving, fleet, solid waste, recycling, pest control, and pools/fountains operations management, including personnel staffing requirements and industry standards.
  • Knowledge of technical specifications, use, and purchasing of equipment, chemicals, supplies, and materials related to the abovementioned units.
  • Knowledge of Human Resources functions such as personnel policies, employment selection, and organizational planning.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with and direct a diverse workforce.
  • Ability to work with and maintain effective relationships with others.

Preferences:

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a large college/university setting.
  • Experience working in a unionized work environment.
  • Spanish language fluency, helpful

Additional Certifications:

Incumbent will be required to travel to meetings or work sites. If driving a State vehicle, must possess and maintain a valid Maryland Class “C” driver’s license or equivalent with fewer than 6 points.

The hiring range for this position is $172,701 – $215,876.

Physical Demands

Work is performed in an on-site, office environment, although eligible for intermittent telework. Incumbent will, on occasion, visit campus sites requiring the ability to walk across campus, drive to off-site locations, etc.
Given the nature of the position, the role is considered Essential subject to a 7 day week, 365 day span of operation.
Incumbent is required to submit a State of Maryland Financial Disclosure form on an annual basis.
