Job Summary

Manage multiple Visual Art & Design labs and lab aides. Work with students, faculty and staff in and for various lab environments.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

1. Be capable and available to assist students, faculty and staff with computers and other equipment in the Graphic Design & Graphic Communications and Photography workrooms/labs.

2. Maintain and manage lab and workroom areas:
  • Keep lab areas clean and well-organized
  • Check out equipment to students
  • Keep active inventory of all equipment and supplies including ink, paper, vinyl, chemicals, film, etc.
  • Maintain studio activity log and equipment/supplies usage
  • Keep equipment clean, well maintained, functioning and in repair
  • Work with the Division Office via the specialization representatives to order and maintain supplies for all areas through proper channels
  • In working with IT personnel, ensure that computer software is functioning and up-to-date
  • With training, become capable to operate classroom and studio equipment including but not limited to computers, printing presses, digital printers, wide format printers, vinyl plotters, laminators, bindery equipment, lights, cameras, scanners, enlargers, fixer recovery units, print dryers, film dryers, cutting and mounting equipment, etc.
  • Oversee and contribute to setup and breakdown of offset printing presses as needed, primarily for printing classes

3. Manage lab aides and Work Study students:
  • Responsible for interviewing and recommending the hiring of lab aides and Work Study students
  • Train lab aides and Work Study students and oversee that their work is being completed in an expeditious and acceptable manner
  • Plan and coordinate work assignments for lab aides and Work Study students
  • Plan, coordinate and post schedules for lab aides and Work Study students
  • Track time entry for lab aides and Work Study students for the Division Office

4. Additional duties:
  • Report to and schedule meetings with Associate Dean, specialization representatives and/or other personnel as necessary
  • Assist with student special events, special projects and activities as scheduled
  • Account for spending and keep specialization representatives apprised of budgetary status
  • Coordinate with Facilities maintenance personnel for repairs, cleanup, remodels, painting, etc.
  • Receive and catalog equipment donations given to the Visual Art & Design Department
  • Keep supervisors informed of any problems/concerns
  • May be asked to drive as a supplies courier and/or in connection with off-site workshops, expos, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent
Two years of photography darkroom and studio experience/education
Significant graphic arts technology related work experience, studio time and/or education.
Some personnel management experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Managerial skills and ability to work with people
  • Knowledge of photography studio and darkroom equipment, techniques, processes and chemicals
  • Knowledge of graphic arts related equipment, techniques, processes and press chemicals
  • Knowledge of Adobe CC, Lightroom and other applicable visual communication software
  • Knowledge of laser and inkjet printers and other lab peripherals
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, abilities, cultures and ethnic backgrounds to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff including those with disabilities.
