Senior Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER, Facilities-Utilities, to provide mechanical engineering design and oversight for campus chilled water, steam, condensate, and medium temperature hot water distribution in MIT's 130 campus buildings, Central Utilities Plant (CUP), and satellite chilled water plant.  Will support major renovations and capital renewal construction projects; provide mechanical engineering direction and expertise on utility distribution systems; be responsible for master planning, project budgeting, design, testing, supervisory operations, safety training, and project management of consultants and contractors; maintain drawing archives for the campus’ primary distribution systems; collaborate with other Facilities departments on the maintenance and operation of the Institute’s cooling and heating distribution systems; coordinate all assigned utility projects; ensure the Institute is provided with utility support in conjunction with its goals and objectives; and focus on the global picture and direction while understanding and monitoring the everyday mechanical system details and operations throughout the campus  May be asked to represent the Institute and the department with clients, suppliers, and outside engineering or architectural firms. 

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  B.S. in mechanical engineering; at least ten years’ experience with large utility distribution systems, specifically for steam and chilled water equipment; strong problem-solving abilities, with emphasis on operation and maintenance of district utility systems; experience with large capital project initiatives and smaller renovation and campus renewal activities; experience with short- and long-term campus master planning, engineering, and operations; experience mentoring staff; strong project management, planning, budgeting, and collaborative working skills; and ability to resolve conflicts, communicate effectively at all levels, and work independently and collaboratively.  PREFERRED:  professional engineer’s license and familiarity or experience with wastewater and stormwater infrastructure.  Job #21251-11
