Assistant Dean for Human Resources and Administration

Job Description

ASSISTANT DEAN FOR HUMAN RESOURCES (HR) AND ADMINISTRATION, School of Science (SoS), to serve as the school’s senior administrative leader for human resources and faculty affairs.   Will be the key administrative liaison between the Dean’s Office and the school’s departments, labs, centers, and institutes (DLCIs) and MIT’s central administrative units; support the dean in overseeing operations and special projects/priorities including, resource allocation/budgeting, HR, administration and management, and communications; and monitor progress of plans/initiatives within the school.  Primary responsibilities fall into three categories: oversight of the school’s complex HR and faculty affairs functions, including academic and non-academic affairs; serving as chief of staff for the dean, partnering on strategic projects, organizing workflow, managing projects, and helping execute strategic, operational and cultural agendas; and developing and interpreting policies/procedures and collaborating with the school’s DLCIs on administrative guidelines and implementation.  

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  B.A./B.S.; ten years’ high-level administrative experience in a university and proven success overseeing faculty affairs and complex HR operations; excellent organizational, interpersonal, diplomacy, active listening, and written and verbal communication skills; working knowledge of the operations of complex research universities or research organizations; and attention to detail but with a view of larger policy concerns.  Must be able to lead and manage a wide variety of responsibilities in multiple functional areas in a fast-paced, dynamic organization; prioritize multiple and often competing demands under deadline pressure; synthesize information from multiple sources and provide succinct and actionable briefing materials and action plans; innovate and solve complex problems; work independently; help initiate and implement new and/or interpret existing policies or procedures; provide leadership and support for a skilled team in the Dean’s Office.  PREFERRED:  MIT experience.  Job #22433-13
