Job Description:

The University of Florida College of Dentistry (UFCD) invites applications and nominations for the Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The Chair is an integral part of the College of Dentistry’s administrative team and provides innovative leadership to further develop a dynamic department while cultivating partnerships that lead to collaborative opportunities.

The department chair is responsible for the overall administration and management of the department which includes 15 faculty, over 20 staff and 20 advanced education students/residents/postdoctoral associates. The department also includes a Center for Implant Dentistry and Division of Neuroscience research and is responsible for the oral and maxillofacial surgery component of the predoctoral (DMD) curriculum.

Responsibilities include:

  • Establishing a vision and strategic plan for the future of the department in consultation with the dean and aligned with the college, academic health center and university.
  • Providing overall fiscal and administrative management of the department and ensuring that the department allocates faculty and other resources to meet the academic and clinical needs of the DMD and advanced education program.
  • Leading the education, research, service and patient care missions of the department.
  • Recruiting and mentoring faculty and ensuring their evaluation and professional development.
  • Ensuring a culture of inclusive excellence, hospitality, collegiality, and collaboration.
  • Candidate would also have teaching, research, clinical and service assignments corresponding to their experience.

The University of Florida, a member of the AAU, is the largest and most comprehensive public university in the state of Florida, with large undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate educational programs.  The UF Health Science Center and its six colleges (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and Health Professions, Veterinary Medicine) are co-located on the Gainesville campus, with additional teaching, research, and patient care sites across Florida, and internationally.

Expected Salary:

Salary and rank are commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Requirements:
  • DDS/DMD or equivalent dental degree.
  • Board certification from the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
  • Demonstrated administrative experience in an academic setting with a distinguished academic record that would support appointment to the rank of associate or full professor.
  • National and/or international reputation as a respected and accomplished clinician, researcher and/or educator. 
  • Record of success in supporting faculty, residents and trainees in their clinical, teaching and academic endeavors through mentorship and development activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead a team. Develop strong ties and connections with internal and external individuals and groups relevant to the department’s mission.
  • Must have experience in teaching, research and service related to OMFS in an academic setting.
  • Must have clinical expertise in the full scope of OMFS and be actively engaged in OMFS practice.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, collaboration, interpersonal and team building skills.
  • Commitment to innovation in education, research and patient care.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MD Degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working closely or directly with senior school administration, hospital administration, university administration, governing boards for higher education and accrediting agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership responsibility with professional organizations dedicated to education.
