Job Description

 

Founded in 1967, Blue Ridge Community College has served the residents of the central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia for over 50 years. Its comprehensive program of instruction includes associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates in occupational/technical and college/university transfer programs. The College also provides non-credit workforce training and special interest classes for individuals, business, and industry.

Part-time position(s) serving as a Blue Ridge Community College advisor for high school students in general and those enrolled in secondary to postsecondary transitional programs. Position(s) will relate career information to postsecondary education and training, help students develop individualized educational career plans, and provide 2/4-year college transfer information and other career options such as military and other post high school options including career and technical schools. Must work effectively with high school faculty, counselors, and transitional program coordinators. Will assist students and their parents in preparing financial aid applications and community college admissions materials. Positions will be located in high schools in the BRCC service region (Augusta, Harrisonburg, Rockingham, Staunton, and Waynesboro). Multiple positions may be filled from this posting.

 

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to develop positive working relationships with students, parents, faculty, staff, business and industry, the general public and education institutions. Experience working in an advisory or counseling capacity, cultural competency, and the ability to work in a fast-paced work environment. Skilled in use of personal computers to input data, produce reports, manage records, track participants, and provide services via online platforms as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Counseling, Education, or a related field; experience in student or career counseling, administrative experience with the financial aid process and student information systems such as PeopleSoft; working knowledge of academic requirements for high school, community colleges, work force and career opportunities. Bilingual in English/Spanish and/or Arabic.
