Educational Programs and Services (EPS) is home to departments and programs that are central to the educational mission of the Stanford University School of Medicine.  We serve all populations of students and trainees who participate in the School's programs: Stanford MD, MS, MSPA, and PhD students; visiting MD students seeking clinical clerkships; postdoctoral scholars and medical fellows; and medical practitioners seeking further professional enrichment. BioSci Careers creates a community of mentors to support the academic advancement, professional development, and career-of-choice decisions of our graduates, medical students and postdoctoral fellows. Through individualized counseling, curriculum and connections, our faculty, alum, and employers teach through their real-life stories and empower trainees to define and tell their own.

Job Purpose

BioSci Careers is excited to announce a full-time Assistant Director, Connections: Leadership and Engagement position for a highly relationship-focused professional who builds future leaders and maximizes mentoring partnerships. The Assistant Director, Connections: Leadership and Engagement, integrate alum and employer connections into all BioSci Careers’ functions: counseling/coaching, connections, and curriculum.

The position develops programming to introduce trainees to various career options, builds networks within various industries, and helps team members integrate alum and future employers into all facets of our work: curriculum, counseling, and connections. They advise, develop policy, and create leadership curricula for career-focused trainee/student groups and regularly meet with trainees to consult on field-specific best practices and success factors.

The Assistant Director, Connections: Leadership and Engagement builds and maintains relationships across campus, with potential speakers, and across the field to inform best practices and to ensure vital and diverse connections with our trainees. They will collaborate with campus career services and alum offices in this function to propagate and maintain the BioSci Connect mentoring program.

Working in a student/trainee-focused, collaborative environment, the Assistant Director, Connections: Leadership and Engagement develop new approaches to mentoring and leadership development in a rapidly changing, dynamic environment and creates and implements a new alum/employer consulting program to scale advising services and increase connections between trainees and external opportunities.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, focused on quality, and demonstrate the capacity to resolve problems using innovative, student/trainee-informed solutions. A growth mindset and careful attention to detail are needed to communicate with team members, constituents, and external organizations. Finally, candidates demonstrate commitment to decentering heteronormativity, whiteness, and privilege in Career Services and Higher Education.

This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting from the Bay Area (hybrid of working at least 3 days campus), subject to operational need.

Core Duties

  • Develop and execute strategic planning for academic and alum mentoring initiatives.
  • Build and maintain cross-campus and cross-sector relationships.
  • Create and implement a new alum/employer consulting program
  • Manage the day-to-day functions to support the success of BioSci Connect
  • Develop and implement career awareness and networking workshops, clinics, panels, coffee chats, and guest lectures, integrating alums and potential employers into offerings
  • Supervise a student assistant to support connecting trainees with alum mentors and BioSci Connect engagement
  • Fulfill academic department outreach requests (e.g., department and student group leadership retreats, home program and university alum events)
  • Advise and develop leadership curriculum for career-focused student groups
  • Update and manage policies for external industry interactions, and student groups on university and external relations.
  • Act as primary liaison to the Stanford Medicine Alumni Association, Stanford Alumni Association, and the Office of Student Engagement (OSE)
  • Support with employer and alum engagement initiatives that focus on expanding professional networks
  • Assist with BioSci Careers’ programs, services and, events.

Education & Experience (Required): 

Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Required): 

  • Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management.
  • Advanced analysis and problem solving skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced customer service skills.
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
  • Understanding of financial transactions.
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.

Desired Qualifications

  • Professional work experience within university student advising, teaching, student activities, or alum services
  • Advanced degree; all fields considered though Education, Student Affairs, Psychology, Sociology, Business, and STEM may be most relevant
  • Experience in developing innovative career and/or leadership workshops/curriculum beyond applications & job search, including: networking, leadership styles, giving/receiving feedback, defining/using Gallup Strengths, career options
  • Experience with student coaching and/or student group advising
  • Understanding of, and experience with, principles of effective mentoring and coaching; or fundamentals of mentorship needs and initiatives
  • Experience with partnership building and resource mobilization; or sustaining collaborative partnerships
  • Demonstrated commitment to decentering heteronormativity, whiteness, and privilege in Career Services and Higher Education overall.
  • Knowledge of the career needs of STEM trainees
  • Significant comfort with new technologies

Physical Requirements: 

  • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States.  Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures . The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate. The expected pay range for this position is $66,100 to $95,600 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
