Department of Medicine: Allergy and Infectious Diseases has an outstanding opportunity for Research Scientist/Engineer 1.

Field of Research:
Immunologic mechanisms of disease pathogenesis with an emphasis on genetic, cellular, and molecular studies of the innate immune responses.

Purpose of Research:
Understanding why individuals have different susceptibility to infections and whether these insights can lead to novel treatment and vaccine strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

We are using cellular and molecular assays to understand how these genes and their variants mediate immune responses in macrophages (50%)
• Molecular biology: Examples of experiments include basic cloning techniques, DNA and RNA purification, restriction enzyme digestions, PCR, Western blots.
• Cell culture work: Prepare, culture, transfect and stimulate cells in vitro. Cryopreservation and thawing of cells. Purification of white blood cell fractions from human blood.

We are pursuing case-control human genetic studies to find associations of polymorphisms in innate immune response genes with disease susceptibility. Experiments in this area include isolating genomic DNA from human samples, genotyping polymorphisms, and preparing data for analysis.   (25%)
• Conduct ELISA assays to measure cytokine production
• Perform flow cytometry to identify specific cell markers and cytokine-producing cells.
• Analysis of the immune response of mice.

The position also includes a high degree of collaborative interaction. There is extensive interaction with others in the lab and it requires working closely with postdoctoral fellows on their research projects. (25%)
• Record keeping, data collection and analysis.

• Order reagents and keep track of laboratory supplies
• Other duties as needed

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor's Degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, or related field  and up to 1 year of experience

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Highly organized and have knowledge of laboratory working environments
• Able to process data with basic statistical analysis, produce graphs, and develop preliminary conclusions and plans for next round of experiments.
• Able to identify technical problems in experiments and find solutions to basic problems. 

DESIRED:

• Experience in cell culture and/or immunology
• Knowledge of microbiology and immunology
• Helps teach undergraduate students specific techniques
