Assistant I, Library (Highland Campus Library) (Temporary)

Job Description Summary:

Position for nights and weekends only. Reports to the Highland Campus Library Head Librarian and is responsible for performing circulation desk computer operations and assisting patrons with directional information. Works at the circulation desk; checks materials in and out; answers phone; and makes phone contact with other Library Services departments regarding circulation desk functions. Collects money and gives receipts for fines; releases student records which have been placed on hold. Opens and/or closes library; keeps statistics; monitors security system, maintains library equipment, and picks up, sorts and delivers mail when appropriate. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Description of Duties and Tasks

  • Performs office duties in support of faculty, staff, and/or student efforts, including word processing, data entry, maintaining files, processing mail, and duplication.
  • Gathers, compiles, and enters data, producing routine reports and documents.
  • Produces handouts, fliers, newsletters, brochures, manuals, and other documents.
  • Answers the telephone, routes calls, or takes messages; responds to and/or directs inquiries in person or on the telephone.
  • May input budget figures, prepares requisitions, logs and tracks expenditures, takes payments, or issues invoices or bills.
  • Maintains tracking systems and logs.
  • Operates office equipment such as copiers and fax machines.?
  • Perform circulation desk duties: including checking materials in/out, collecting fines, updating patron records, answering the phone, and removing student holds.
  • Perform collection and stack maintenance duties: including shelving of materials, shelf reading, light cleaning, and other assigned tasks. 
  • Provide support for Librarians and Library Assistants.
  • Complete word processing and data entry tasks
  • Other duties, and special projects, as assigned.

  • Knowledge of Library of Congress Classification System 
  • Experience with online circulation systems such as SirsiDynix 
  • Library customer service experience

Physical Requirements

  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds and maneuver book trucks. 

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
