Genentech

Job Description

The Position

The Departments of Infectious Diseases and Complex in vitro Systems (Safety Assessment) at Genentech have an exciting open postdoctoral training opportunity to strengthen our understanding of host-pathogen interactions using more physiologically relevant in vitro cultures systems. We are seeking a dedicated and innovative researcher for a postdoctoral training position to join the Kapadia and Homan labs to study host-microbe interactions in Acute Respiratory Distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis, Cystic Fibrosis (CF) or bacterial/viral pneumonia.  This position will work very closely with colleagues in The Complex In vitro Systems Lab to establish and characterize novel in vitro models to reproduce disease pathophysiological traits with the goal of identifying novel targets for therapeutic interventions and biomarkers of disease.

Requirements:

  • Candidates should have recently obtained or will soon obtain a doctoral degree in one of the following fields: Bioengineering, Microbiology, Immunology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Materials Science/Engineering (with heavy bio focus), or Biochemistry.

  • Experience sourcing and culturing human cells of lung origin.

  • Experience deriving and culturing alveolar organoids is desirable.

  • Experience with culturing cells at the air liquid interface (ALI) is desirable.

  • Experience with cell viability, permeability and barrier function assays is desirable.

  • Previous experience using or developing microphysiological systems (MPS) or organs-on-chip platforms is highly advantageous.

  • Previous experience with formulating biomaterials, especially those designed for in vitro lung modeling applications is highly desirable.

  • Understanding of fundamental lung physiology is advantageous.

  • Familiarity with techniques such as qRT-PCR, RNA-seq, immunofluorescence (IF) /confocal microscopy, time-lapse microscopy, high-content screening, image analysis, and cell culture automation are desirable.

  • Bioinformatics skills especially in analyzing large multi-omics datasets (e.g. single cell/nuclei, proteomics, CITE-seq) are desirable but not required.

  • Ability to analyze, integrate, and clearly communicate/present data to colleagues is required.

  • Enthusiasm to solve challenging complex biological problems, rigorous and data-driven scientific logic and solid technical skills are essential qualities.

  • Qualified candidates must have a strong publication record to demonstrate productivity and independent thinking.
