Research Scientist

Argonne

Job Description

The successful candidate will conduct research activities within the transportation/power multi-physics computational team and in collaboration with other computational scientists at the Laboratory.

The successful candidate will perform multi-physics and multi-scale simulations for advanced propulsion and power combustion systems by applying and developing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes and by leveraging high-performance computing (HPC) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques.

  • Lead combustion engine modeling research tasks and perform high-fidelity simulations of internal combustion engines and gas turbines for propulsion and power, with focus on low carbon fuels such as hydrogen or methanol.

  • Lead the development and implementation of novel CFD models for improving the predictive capability of CFD codes (open-sources and commercial).

  • Work on Argonne LCRC and ALCF computing resources as part of a multidisciplinary team involving combustion modelers and computational scientists to run the simulations at-scale using both current large clusters and the next generation supercomputing architectures.

  • Work to consistently meet priorities and deadlines set by the research sponsor(s).

  • Supervise postdocs and students on multiple projects.

  • Collaborate with other staff scientists, postdocs, and students in the group, and with researchers in other divisions and directorates.

  • Present and publish results in peer reviewed society technical reports and journal articles.

  • Represent the Laboratory and the group at main conferences and workshops, or program review meetings.

  • Actively seek out proposal writing opportunities with DOE and other agencies. Participate and lead proposals with industry and academia.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in mechanical/aerospace/energy engineering, or a related discipline.

  • 2+ years of Postdoctoral experience.

  • Knowledge of internal combustion engine and gas turbine modeling.

  • Knowledge of turbulence modeling, fuel injection modeling, and combustion modeling.

  • Knowledge of conventional and alternative fuels for combustion applications.

  • Knowledge of advanced combustion concepts for high-efficiency engines.

  • Knowledge and experience with high performance computing (HPC).

  • Knowledge and experience with Machine Learning algorithms.

  • Knowledge and experience with physics based CFD model development.

  • Knowledge of multi-dimensional code development (in Fortran/C/C++).

  • Knowledge of parallel scientific computing (MPI, OpenMP).

  • Knowledge of CPU/GPU architectures.

  • Knowledge of exa-scale codes and previous experience with using supercomputers.

  • Ability to meet project needs and deadlines.

  • Collaborative skills, including the ability to work well with other divisions.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills to pursue new research opportunities.

  • Skilled verbal and written communication skills at all levels of the organization.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
