Numerical Modeling Geomechanics Postdoc

Job Description

The Energy Geosciences Division (EGD) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is looking for an outstanding Numerical Modeling Geomechanics Postdoc who have the potential and desire to contribute to exciting research projects in geologic carbon sequestration and geomechanics.

In order to achieve the United States’ aggressive goal of reducing greenhouse gas emission by 50% in 2030, carbon capture and geologic sequestration will be required at a very large scale, likely involving hundreds of industrial-scale CO2 storage projects (or clusters of integrated projects) across the country. These projects will involve injection volumes that result in large-scale pressure increases in the subsurface and may cause unwanted geomechanical effects, for example creating leakage pathways in the caprock or reactivating critically stressed faults. As part of a new and exciting project to address challenges associated with industrial-scale CO2 storage in the subsurface, this position involves numerical modeling of induced seismicity and potential leakage associated with activation of faults. In detail, we are looking for a collaborator who is familiar with using numerical models and analytical derivations to better understand how injections of water into the Earth’s crust can reactivate faults, leading to both stable aseismic slip and earthquake nucleation.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct numerical modeling of geologic carbon sequestration and geomechanics, including fault activation and induced seismicity using existing software.
  • Develop and implement constitutive models that better describe fault mechanical and hydraulic behavior when activated.
  • Model field experiments of fault activation conducted at international underground research laboratories dedicated to understand fault physics.
  • Present research at meetings and publications in journals, conference papers, and refereed journal articles.
  • Adhere with Berkeley Lab’s environmental, health and safety guidelines.

What is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. degree in Rock Mechanics, Soil Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Civil Engineering, Earthquake geophysics or a related geoscience field.
  • Experience in numerical modeling of geomechanics and subsurface multiphase fluid flow processes, including skills in coding.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team and form strong collaborations.
  • An established publication record.
  • Strong communication skills both in written and verbal

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in performing experiments and analyzing data from laboratory and field experiments is desirable but not required.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $6,431.00 - $7,887.00 and is expected to start at $7,074.00 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
