Part-Time Human Anatomy Lab – Adjunct Faculty Series

The Department of Cell and Tissue Biology is seeking a part-time Human Anatomy Lab faculty member to join our department. The selected candidate will be appointed at the level of Instructor, Assistant, Associate, or Full in the Adjunct Series depending on qualifications and interests.

Founded in 1881, the UCSF School of Dentistry has striven to educate the leading practitioners, scholars and faculty members of the next generation. As a leading institution of oral and craniofacial health, our educational programs have grown to include, in addition to our DDS programs, an array of PhD, post-graduate and residency programs. Our student dentists, residents and faculty handle over 120,000 patient visits a year in our comprehensive UCSF Dental Center, and our students staff numerous community-based externship sites. The school is one of the top oral and craniofacial research enterprises in the world, ranked the top dental school in the country in research funding from the National Institutes of Health for 25 years, and home to several leading translational research programs.

The Department of Cell and Tissue Biology (CTB) is a basic science department within the School of Dentistry. The department was established in 2005 and includes 15 faculty with primary appointments and five faculty with secondary appointments. Additionally, the department is home to numerous postdoctoral fellows as well as graduate students in programs ranging from Biomedical Sciences, Tetrad and Biophysics to Developmental & Stem Cell Biology and Oral & Craniofacial Sciences. Faculty research interests include cell biology mechanisms relevant to cytoskeletal dynamics, development, metabolism, cancer, immunology and neurobiology.

Position Description:
Faculty in the Adjunct Professor series are individuals who are predominantly engaged in research or other creative work and who participate in teaching, or individuals who contribute primarily to teaching and have a limited responsibility for research or other create work; these individuals may be professional practitioners of appropriate distinction. Appointees with titles in this series also engage in University and public service consistent with their assignments. Teaching responsibilities will include laboratory instruction of gross human anatomy for dental health professional students. The predoctoral dental curriculum is a four-year program with approximately 60 students in each cohort. First-year dental students participate in a cadaveric dissection-based anatomy course within their first quarter in the Dental Anatomy Laboratory located at the Parnassus campus. This 1,964 square foot facility houses 23 down-draft tables with excellent ventilation, a storage room for prosections, and an adjoining shared office. Teaching responsibilities will include laboratory instruction of gross human anatomy of the thorax, neck, and head for dental health professional students during this course (scheduled for the Fall Quarter, approximately September through December annually) as well as anatomy practical development, proctoring, and grading.

Required Qualifications:

• PhD, MD, EdD, DPT or equivalent academic doctoral degree.
• Experience teaching in dissection-based cadaveric courses and documented excellence in teaching gross human anatomy. Successful applicants are expected to demonstrate expertise in cadaveric dissections and prosections.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience specifically dissecting the head and neck is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of other human anatomic sciences (neuroanatomy, embryology, histology) is desirable.
• Experience developing active learning instructional approaches as well as didactic lecture-based instruction is preferred.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
