Job Description


The Chemical and Fuel Cycle Technologies division is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to join a multidisciplinary team developing innovative processes for recycling nuclear materials for advanced reactors, with a focus on high-temperature electrochemical processes in molten salt electrolytes.

As a part of this team, you will:

  • Apply and improve pyroprocess operations such as oxide reduction at engineering- scale to support industrialization.

  • Develop and test new materials and electrochemical cell configurations.

  • Perform innovative experiments and electrochemical measurements (cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, polarization tests, etc.) in molten salt electrolytes to advance the technical understanding of oxide to metal conversion and molten salt chemistry.

  • Improve understanding of the relationship between operating conditions and product quality.

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, and Laboratory management through status updates, technical research reports, project presentations, and other regular channels.

  • Develop technical ideas and proposals to advance the development of pyrochemical processes.

  • This position will require an on-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois five days per week. 

Position Requirements

  • Recent or soon-to-be completed PhD (typically within the last 0-3 years) in Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science or related fields

  • Skill in devising and performing experiments to acquire data, using and maintaining research equipment, compiling, evaluating, and reporting test results.

  • Experience in electrochemistry, electrochemical engineering, or nuclear engineering.

  • Knowledge of fundamental thermodynamics and kinetics.

  • Experience with molten salt systems, actinide chemistry, or materials science is desired, but not mandatory.

  • Experience working safely with radioactive materials in engineering controls such as gloveboxes or hoods is desired, but not mandatory.

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

  • To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.
