Position Summary

The Director of University Facilities Planning and Programming will be responsible for management of campus master plans and facilities development plans and space programming. They will provide vital space planning and pre-design expertise to structure and manage the programming and physical planning of capital construction projects to meet University space needs.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Facilities Management, the Director will interface with academic and administrative stakeholders at all levels to develop programming and space planning scenarios for a broad range of capital and strategic planning initiatives ranging from new buildings to modest office renovations.

Essential Functions

  • In support of the University’s facilities strategy, develop building space programs and construction cost projections, monitor and coordinate planning process with University administration offices administer professional services contracts, maintain University’s aesthetic and functional objectives, including timely and economical construction of low maintenance, long life, energy conservative, architecturally correct and functional buildings
  • Analyzes utilization and allocation of space by departments, administrative units, and schools across all campuses. Establishes and maintains a detailed space inventory for the University. Develops programs for space allocation to support priority University initiatives. Assists University Departments in maximizing utilization of assigned space and quantifying future needs.
  • Manages the Lincoln Center Facilities Master Plan and Rose Hill Facilities Development Plan. Primary University Coordinator with the New York City Department of Planning and Landmarks Preservation Commission. Manages, at a capital planning level, building and site regulatory requirements of NYC, state, and federal codes and regulations.
  • Supports the Office of the Vice President for Administration in strategic matters related to space assignment, planning and strategic initiatives across university divisions
  • Develops and manages Long Range Capital Improvement, Capital Renewal and Renovation Strategic Plans for funding. Initiates the implementation of major facilities development and renovation projects. Assists in the selection of consultants in support of facilities planning and project development.
  • Responsible for managing the University’s off-site real estate portfolio including the Westchester campus. Develops plans to develop off-site properties to best and highest use. Leads due diligence activities during real estate acquisition and disposition.
  • Maintains and updates university design standards in conjunction with facilities staff and outside design consultants.
  • Assumes responsibility for preparing, reviewing, and issuing programming and space planning deliverables in graphic and quantitative formats from a range of source materials including space surveys, end user interviews, program information, functional analyses, benchmarking and other sources of information.
  • Is responsible for day-to-day client interaction, production and management of multiple planning studies.
  • Performs specific tasks for this position which will include data gathering, analysis and organization of information into reports and graphic formats; conducting client interviews, preparing functional space program documents, conceptual design alternatives and other deliverables for campus space planning initiatives.
  • Is responsible for leading planning project meetings and producing meeting minutes and other documentation as required; required to have a working knowledge of New York City building and fire code regulations and building systems infrastructure as they relate to planning and pre-design studies.
  • Is responsible for contributing to and administering the development and implementation of graphic standards and deliverables, including software implementation to support planning efforts.
  • Serves as the Associate Vice President’s representative in both internal Facilities and campus wide capacities for all space planning and programming issues.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Planning, Interior Design, or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience required. .
  • Extensive computer experience in CAD software packages, database, spreadsheet, and word processing software is required.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, including the ability to build trust and understanding with clients.
  • Ability to partner closely with colleagues in a strong team environment and have a proactive approach toward work products.
  • Ability to negotiate and balance the expectations and priorities of demanding constituencies while keeping the University’s priorities in view.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as creativity, attention to detail, and analytical skills are required.
  • Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in Architecture
  • Previous experience in a University or similar institutional environment, and experience with a broad range of project types including science lab planning, space programming, administrative space planning .
  • AICP certification.

Minimum Starting Salary: $130,000

Maximum Starting Salary: $150,000

Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
