Marketing Assistant (Part-Time)

Job Description

The Marketing Assistant will assist the Marketing Director with daily activities of the Marketing Department including any internal and external marketing and communication efforts such as public relations activities, media inquiries, publication development, and other promotional activities. This position will be scheduled for 25 hours per week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

A. Create and distribute external e-newsletters using Constant Contact email software
B. Write, proof, and distribute media releases upon receiving proper approval
C. Maintain a college-wide calendar of special events and activities
D. Update and maintain Surry Community College’s social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
E. Update college website, www.surry.edu, with press releases, schedules, calendar of events, etc.
F. Maintain updated media contact database along with other special distribution lists
G. Take photos as necessary for internal and external uses such as press releases, articles, schedule mailer, and catalog
H. Maintain a press clipping file system on a weekly basis
I. Assist college personnel with special projects, such as flyers, pamphlets, or other promotional material
J. Manage the flow of marketing/public relations requests
K. Represent the Marketing Department at meetings, events, and special functions
L. Complete proper paperwork for accounting for department accounts payable
M. Assist with coordination and promotion of special events on campus
N. Maintain a clean and safe work area
O. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Marketing

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common business correspondence and reports.
  • Ability to articulate professional responses to common inquiries and/or complaints from students, faculty, staff, or the public at-large.
  • Ability to write using proper grammar and punctuation.
  • Ability to effectively present information to administration, students, faculty, staff, or the public at-large.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to apply and understand standard mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

REASONING ABILITY:
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Understanding of and commitment to the unique nature and role of the College and to the philosophy of the community college system.

Required Qualifications

Associate Degree in Business Administration, Marketing or related field; experience/proficiency in the use of integrated software (Microsoft Word and Excel), social media websites, effective oral and written communication skills, and the ability to coordinate and prioritize office duties

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and experience in an educational office setting
