Argonne

Job Description

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking an Assistant Chemist to mainly conduct research on alkali metal-air/oxygen type battery systems under the guidance of a supervisor.

The candidate should have a broad understanding of the alkali metal-air/oxygen battery systems and how to improve performances and better understand the underlying mechanisms, the project will entail physical/chemical and electrochemical characterization of different cathode, anode and electrolyte composition using various characterization techniques.

The candidate should have well-established experience in employing gas analysis tool for understanding the behavior of alkali-air/oxygen batteries. He/she will establish the relationship between the type of catalyst centers with the performance and work to uncover working mechanisms.

He/she will also conduct novel in operando characterization of battery systems using advanced fiber-optic techniques to better understand the working mechanisms.

The candidate should be able to analyze data, prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications, present papers at scientific meetings, and prepare reports and presentations/papers for group meetings.

Position Requirements

  • Successful candidate will have at least two years of postdoctoral training in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, materials science, electrochemistry, or other related

  • Mandatory skill in operating and interpreting data from differential electrochemical mass spectrometer

  • Deep understanding of electrochemistry and ability to conduct cyclic voltammetry, EIS, chronoamperometry and galvanostatic tests of half/full cells

  • Knowledge of synchrotron-based X-ray techniques (such as X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy) for in situ studies of materials/interfacial chemistry during battery operation

  • Good knowledge, skill, and understanding of other battery systems such as lithium sulfur, lithium sulfide cathodes, lithium metal, lithium-ion cathodes

  • Proficiency in Python or similar scripting tool for data processing

  • Considerable knowledge of processing and analyzing results. Strong oral and written communication skills and excellent record of publication and external recognition in relevant areas
