Responsibilities*

  • Serve as a clinical resource and consultant in a multi-disciplinary setting to patients, families, nurses, and medical staff specializing in ostomy care, peristomal wound management, and complex wounds.
  • Perform daily phone and triage tasks in MiChart related to patient concerns, issues, and needs.
  • Perform professional presentations/ lectures.
  • Care is focused on young adults, adult, and geriatric patient population.  Pediatric care will be provided as deemed appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the nursing school and/or other groups, both inside and outside the institution, to support outpatient ostomy needs.
  • Perform pre-operative and post-operative care for patients and families, which includes education, surgical markings, and plans of care in the outpatient setting.
  • Provide consultation and recommendations of wound and ostomy care supplies and equipment.
  • Develop patient, family, and nursing education materials related to management of complex wounds, fistulas, and ostomy care.
  • Plan and implement educational programs for healthcare professionals (students, residents, fellows, etc.) to support professional development programs.
  • Participate in the development of institutional policies, procedures, and guidelines in keeping with evidenced-based practice and standards for nursing care of complex wounds, fistulas, and ostomies. 
  • Participate in quality assurance/quality improvement and evidenced-based practice initiatives related to ostomy and wound care.
  • Participate in department committee meetings to improve ostomy/wound care across the care continuum.

Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted under the Role-Specific Advancement Model (RSAM) as:
CCC- COMPETENT NE.
Actual RSAM LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
RSAM levels range from CCC-COMPETENT NE to CCC-EXPERT NE TO CCC-MASTERY NE or CCC-Mastery Plus NE.

Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position. Posting may be filled after the initial 5-day posting period.

Required Qualifications*

As evidence by interviews, recent performance appraisals, and reference feedback:

  • A current license in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse.
  • Educational Requirement; applicant must meet one of the following: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing OR an Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Master’s degree in Nursing
  • Must have a minimum of 5-years experience with complex patients in a critical care setting.
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years recent (within the last four (4) years) ostomy and wound care experience in direct patient care (inpatient, outpatient, or home-care) setting.
  • Minimum of 1 year, and currently credentialed, in wound, ostomy, and continence nursing care (CWOCN certification) by an accredited national certification board and maintain certification while in this role.

  • Experience developing and providing education related to WOCN practices and/or patient care to healthcare professionals.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking skills in daily practice:  assessment, planning, intervention, an evaluation.
  • Demonstrated collaborative practice including commitment to self-directed and autonomous practice.  
  • Must have excellent time management skills and prioritize patient care needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain professional working relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills demonstrated through previous evaluations.

Work Schedule

Hours per week: 40 hours
Shift / Days / Hours:  Day Shift, Monday-Friday, 8am – 5pm
Location: primarily Taubman Center and UH Cancer Center with some potential for other locations as needed based on division growth changes/strategies.
 

*Note: All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
