Bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, or a related discipline.

Work Experience

At least two years’ pharmaceutical or biomanufacturing experience required

Preferred Qualifications

Prior BioWork teaching experience within any NC Community College preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System
  2. Demonstrated ability to use modern instructional technology (Microsoft Office, learning management systems, e-mail, Internet, student information databases, library research databases) and experience with Internet-based instruction
  3. Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective teaching
  4. Knowledge of pharmaceutical/biomanufacturing process equipment and processes (bioreactors, scales-balance, filtration, liquid extraction, higher purity filtration, autoclave, incubator, ph meter, and lab equipment.)
  5. Knowledge of cGMP’s and ISO (International Standards Organization).
  6. Familiar with FDA (Food and Drug Administration) policies and pharmaceutical CFR regulations.
  7. Familiar with workplace safety hazards.
  8. Ability to be innovative, creative, and motivated as well as organized, accurate, and punctual with paperwork and assigned tasks
  9. Sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students, colleagues, and community groups
  10. Ability to make presentations to small or large audiences
  11. Ability to establish and maintain effective, civil, and respectful communication and interpersonal relations throughout the college and the community
  12. Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality
  13. Familiarity with OSHA standards as they apply to educational environments

Essential Functions

The Instructor is responsible for course preparation, delivery, grading, and records management in an efficient and effective manner for courses in the Life Sciences department. Courses are predominately BioWork and continuing education but could also include coursework in the Biotechnology AAS (Associate in Applied Sciences) degree program, summer camps for middle schoolers and high schoolers, and/or industry training. The Instructor will work closely with his or her Program Director and other faculty on matters related to and for the benefit of the Science and Math Guided Career Pathway and its students

Job Duties

More specifically, and consistent with the terms and conditions of appointment as stipulated in the contract of employment, the Instructor is accountable for the duties listed below:
  1. Provide accessible, quality learning experiences for all courses, as assigned, for the full duration of scheduled instruction, including seated, online, hybrid, academic success, and/or interdisciplinary capstone courses as needed at any of Durham Tech’s instructional sites
  2. Be fully prepared with a syllabus and instructional plans for each class session in accordance with the stated objectives of the course
  3. Collaborate with the Program Director and Curriculum Developer to ensure that the program is meeting the needs of business and industry;
  4. Collaborate with the Life Sciences Career Development-Employment Specialist to coordinate industry guest speakers for courses;
  5. Serve as an educational advisor to students and participate in semester advising and registration activities for both assigned advisees and as needed by individual students
  6. Coordinate needed tutoring sessions for students with the BioWork tutor;
  7. Maintain complete course and student records, reports, and forms
  8. Enforce academic policy and procedures at all times, and comply with institutional rules and regulations
  9. Learn the college’s Learning Management System (Sakai) and other virtual platforms, such as Canva, Quizizz, Quizlet, etc., to deliver effective, high-quality learning experiences in the classroom, lab, and online;
  10. Maintain posted office and on-campus hours sufficient to fulfill all contracted duties and individual professional obligations, as well as to meet the needs of the department, division, and college
  11. Work with various external stakeholders, such as the NC BioNetwork and NC Biotechnology Center, to develop course materials relevant to current trends in the region;
  12. Partner with other areas of the college to deliver customized training courses as needed;
  13. Seek out and participate in professional development opportunities to stay abreast of best teaching practices, the technology used in the classroom or online, and trending industry practices;
  14. Participate in graduation exercises, open house events, etc. as requested;
  15. Assume other appropriate responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the Life Sciences Program Director in meeting the needs of the institution.

Required Working Hours

A minimum of a 40-hour work week as determined with the supervisor to allow the employee to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities, including occasional evening and weekend hours.
