Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Operations Coordinator for the Division of Life Sciences. The position is responsible for the weekly and daily preparation of the teaching laboratories by setting up equipment and supplies for weekly activities under the direction of the course faculty and Supervisor to Laboratory Instructional Support so that each teaching laboratory is appropriately ready for class use.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Responsible for executing all activities to be conducted by students as per their weekly schedule.
  • Participates in weekly preparatory sessions by interacting with and guiding teaching assistants on lab activities and equipment usage as well as offer troubleshooting tips.
  • Prepares chemicals, materials and solutions for lab exercises and conducts quality control testing on equipment, materials and lab exercises prior to the weekly preparatory sessions thereby creating a safe, functional, well equipped, and well prepared teaching laboratory.
  • Responsible for sending DNA samples for sequencing, receiving and distributing DNA sequence information to Teaching Assistants (TAs) and students in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for preparation to ensure that all REHS, health and safety regulations are met within the laboratory and preparatory spaces.
  • Meets with student lab groups and TAs to review their proposed methods and materials prior to initiation of their research projects and subsequently monitors project progress so that needed materials and supplies are available and material and equipment problems are solved in a timely manner.
  • Assists with inventory, storage, and disbursement of supplies and equipment as directed.
  • Maintains and makes routine repairs to equipment used in laboratory instruction.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a science curriculum or a combination of college education and work experience as a technician/lab coordinator.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be responsible, possess good time management skills, maintain organization and a clean working environment, and have excellent communication skills to foster and maintain professional relationships with faculty, Supervisor, staff, teaching assistants, and undergraduatestudents.
  • Working knowledge of scientific research design and laboratory techniques in biology , ranging from those used in introductory level (General Biology) to more advanced (Genetics and Microbiology) courses, but specifically conducting and analyzing Polymerase Chain Reaction(PCR).
  • In addition to strong math skills for calculating concentrations and dilutions of samples and reagents, applicant must have the basic chemistry skills, including pipetting, needed to independently prepare reagents needed in laboratory activities in a timely fashion.
  • Applicant must also be proficient in understanding and executing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in the biology laboratory.
  • Working knowledge and experience in techniques related to DNA sequencing (DNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis, and sequence analysis) and water quality (using pH probe, nitrate sensor,etc.). Ability to work directly with graduate and undergraduate students to provide laboratory expertise in a supportive instructional environment.
  • Experience following laboratory safety protocols, knowledge of personal protective equipment, and understand chemical compatibility and proper waste disposal.
  • Must have basic computer and effective writing skills required for generating laboratory exercise protocols and disseminating information to faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and students (word processing, spread sheet, graphics program, Canvas).
  • Must be able to follow instructions from superiors and ask for clarification when
    needed.
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks, work professionally, both independently and in a team, and carry out multiple concurrent tasks, often with many interruptions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting a college-level teaching laboratory.
  • Experience with data analysis, use of pH probe and other sensors.
  • Experience extracting, purifying and isolating DNA from bacteria, plant and animal samples in a research laboratory.
  • Experience in inventory management and computing skills would be useful.
Equipment Utilized
  • The position requires an individual who can independently use autoclaves, centrifuges, incubators, ovens, various types of pipettes, measuring devices, thermocyclers, vortexers, pH meter and additional equipment normally used in the preparation of media, buffers and other reagents for laboratory experiments; this equipment will be used on a weekly basis.
  • The position requires the ability to prepare, conduct, and analyze PCR and electrophoresis results; DNA sequencing is a major component of the lab activities and thus related equipment and materials will be used on a weekly basis.
  • Similarly, on a daily basis, this position requires strong mathematics, algebra, and analytical skills so that calculations needed in preparation of reagents and dilutions are made independently and correctly.
  • In addition, this position requires basic computer skills and writing skills (word processing, spreadsheet, graphics Sakai, Canvas) as they will be utilized on a weekly basis to troubleshoot problems that arise and to convey full and complete information to involved parties.
  • Similarly, the candidate must be able to trouble-shoot the computer-related equipment and software needed for data collection on a weekly basis.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift up to 55 lbs.
  • Requires standing/walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • The LOC must have an amenable work schedule to ensure coverage for day and night classes throughout the semester based on a 37.5 hour workweek as set forth by the Supervisor.
  • Will need to work evening during the Fall semester to ensure coverage of classes offered.
  • Will need to work during the summer to cover summer classes.
