Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Student Counselor for the School of Communication and Information- Dean’s Office. The position reports to the Assistant Dean for Student Services in the School of Communication and Information.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides academic advising and student services support to students in degree, non-degree, and non-credit programs of theSchool of Communication and Information, with a focus especially on undergraduate students.
  • The Student Counselor works as part of the undergraduate student services team and works closely with program directors and faculty to develop, implement, and evaluate program policies and services to meet the needs of undergraduate students in the areas of academics, student life and activities, career development, and/or special populations.
  • Responsible for student interactions through the life-cycle of their program: providing guidance to prospective students throughout the admissions process; using professional judgment to evaluate academic credentials in order to recommend admission decisions; providing academic, personal, and career counseling and advice; facilitating orientation programs and information sessions for new and prospective students; coordinating intervention programs for students experiencing difficulty; and developing special projects, activities, and rich media communication.
  • Provides resolutions to an assortment of academic and administrative problems of moderately complex scope, provides analytical reports to faculty and administrators, and may serve as a liaison to university departments and offices.
  • This position employs judgment within defined practices and procedures, and works independently within broadly defined work objectives.

Work Arrangement
Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, psychology, counseling, education, social work, or a related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of student development and academic theories, methodologies, and current practices in higher education.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience in higher education student services that demonstrates skills in academic advising, student support services, and retention practices.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle complex situations with diplomacy
  • Computer proficiency in generating analysis of data
  • A strong commitment to providing outstanding student services is fundamental
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree strongly preferred since candidate is expected to provide developmental advising with an understanding of the fundamentals of counseling.
  • Experience with customer relationship management and retention software is a plus.
  • Prefers three (3) years of relevant experience in higher education student services that demonstrates skills in academic advising, student support services, and retention practices.

  • university systems including IMS, course scheduling, RIAS, and Discoverer;
  • cloud computing programs such as Salesforce.com;
  • online learning management systems such as eCollege, Canvas, and Sakai;
  • webconferencing programs such as Elluminate, Adobe Connect Pro, and WebEx;
  • collaborative documents and programs such as wikis, GoogleDocs, MindManager/MindJet, and MS Project;
  • social software and media such as Constant Contact, Facebook, Twitter, Ning, and LinkedIn;
  • webdesign and maintenance software such as Drupal, WordPress, Dreamweaver, and CamStudio;
  • standard office equipment such as desktop computers, copiers, printers.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift items up to 10 lbs.
  • Must be able to participate in room set up for events including moving tables and chairs.

Immunization Requirements


Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.
