The Office for Research’s core mission is to advance Rutgers’s preeminence in research. The Office for Research (OFR or Research) provides essential services university-wide that support faculty research and scholarship. The OFR teams support identifying sponsored award funding opportunities, submission of grant proposals, post-award financial management, negotiation of contracts, research regulatory affairs, intellectual property and commercialization activities, core services, and animal care provided by the Comparative Medicine Resources organization.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a PPL Lab Animal Care Technician for the Office for Research. As part of the Office for Research, this position provides diversified care, feeding, transportation, and daily observation for all animal species used in research and teaching.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Coordinates and assists in the general maintenance of the facilities.
  • Ensures the humane care and treatment of the animals.
  • Participates in leading, directing and training Laboratory Animal Care Technicians, Senior Laboratory Animal Care Technicians, and others.
  • Responsible for daily maintenance of multiple animal colony rooms to be in compliance with animal welfare regulations, university and CMR policies.
  • Duties include performance of animal husbandry and monitoring procedures with special attention to the needs of virus-free species, observing and reporting signs of illness, injury or distress in animals.
  • Interacts with their supervisor regarding needs of individual research projects and PI’s and will become familiar will all project protocols as it relates to daily husbandry needs of the colony rooms they maintain; ensures areas of noncompliance with regulations are reported; daily animal census are recorded and performs euthanasia when instructed.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent, with coursework completed in biological or animal sciences and three years of research related animal handling experience.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and/or related college level study in animal science may be substituted for the above.
  • Must have American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technician Certification.
  • Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Requires the ability to group lead.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Will be required to pass pre-employment and periodic physical examinations and to participate in occupational health programs for animal workers.
  • Regular workweek may include weekends and/or evening shift work.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers’ Defensive Driving Course.
Certifications/Licenses
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification with group-leading experience required for the performance of the job.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications
  • AALAS certification as Technologist (LATg), specialized training, specific knowledge, skill and abilities, as demonstrated by the LATg level is desirable.
Equipment Utilized
  • Cage washing equipment, Autoclaves, Floor scrubbers, Chemical mixing stations, Dry heat oven.
  • Tattooing machines.
  • Various computer programs.
  • May need to drive University vehicle.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • On prolonged daily basis must be able to perform the physical demands of the job of being able to lift 50 pounds, push and pull heavy loads of equipment, twisting of upper trunk, repetitive and overhead lifting.
  • Can work in cage wash and animal room conditions while wearing safety apparel and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Can be bending, stooping, or reaching for long periods of time.
  • Additionally, the position requires the ability to stand or walk on hard surfaces for most of the workday, including slippery surfaces.
  • The work environment includes potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, and the use of hazardous and restricted chemicals.
  • Potential exposure to animal dander, fluids and soiled waste as well as cleaning chemicals.
  • The wearing of PPE could increase body temperature.

Immunization Requirements
