Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Associate I in Rutgers Institute for Translational Medicine and Science.
The Research Associate will work independently to manage daily research projects, data collection, and organization of the laboratory. They must be able to identify and resolve technical problems, implement assigned projects, and will be required to assist in writing manuscripts. This individual will train and supervise students in the lab. Primary responsibilities will include culturing several different lung cell types (both primary cells and cell lines), as well as, several different cancer cell lines, performing immunological assays (immuno-florescent staining, ELISA, western blots, immunoprecipitations, and flow cytometry/FACS), molecular biology techniques (PCR & real time-PCR techniques, DNA and mRNA sample preparation, plasmid DNA preparation, DNA subcloning, siRNA/shRNA transfections, Adenovirus/Lentivirus production, and in situ hybridizations) and performing single-molecule biophysical assays (magnetic twisting cytometry, Fourier transform traction microscopy, and DNA double-helix based single-molecule tension probe). Additional responsibilities will include maintaining equipment; keeping accurate records and notes; ordering lab supplies; working knowledge of MS Office to keep inventories of experimental reagents; data analysis and general lab duties.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • The Research Associate will work independently to manage daily research projects, data collection, and organization of the lab. Identifies and resolves technical problems, implements assigned projects and will assist in writing manuscripts.
  • Cell Culture work: media preparation, quality control testing, and daily maintenance of human airway muscle cell lines & cancer cell lines.
  • Protein work: Protein isolation, immuno-precipitations, western blotting, & flow cytometry.
  • Molecular Biology work: RNA/DNA isolation & purification, PCR & real time PCR, transfections, siRNA/shRNA transfections, Adenovirus/Lentivirus production, and in situ hybridizations.
  • Develop independent lines of research.
  • Generate data for peer-reviewed publications.
  • Provide scientific instruction, guidance, and mentoring for students in the lab.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • PhD Degree and two (2) years of laboratory experience.
  • Experience with cell culture, immunology, promoter analysis, gene targeting, RNA interference, siRNA/shRNA transfections, Adenovirus/Lentivirus production, and single-molecule biophysical assays.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to work independently in molecular biology research.
  • Strong and consistent record of publication in high impact scientific journals.
  • Expertise in molecular biology and cell signaling.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and teach, maintain records of experiments, analyze experimental data, and maintain lab equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience performing single-molecule biophysical assays (magnetic twisting cytometry, Fourier transform traction microscopy, and DNA double-helix based single-molecule tension probe).
  • Previous supervisory experience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Must be able to lift or exert force up to ten (30) pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office environment. Moderate noise.
