Overview
The Eric B. Chandler Health Center is a comprehensive, family-oriented community health center, jointly operated by the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Eric B. Chandler Community Board, Inc.
The Center, opened in October 1987, is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Eric B. Chandler, an active and respected community leader recognized for his work in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and a member of the Board of Directors of the Urban League of Greater New Brunswick.
Primary care services available at Chandler include: family medicine; internal medicine; infectious disease (HIV counseling, testing, and treatment); pediatrics (including EPSDT and child well-care); obstetrics and gynecology; podiatry; family planning; and dentistry (including preventive, restoration, and curative). Other services of the center include social services, community outreach, nutrition, and health education. Laboratory services are offered as well.
Services of the center are provided by appointment. A variety of insurances are accepted including Medicaid, Medicare, and various types of managed care and private insurance plans. The center also offers a sliding fee scale, which is updated annually based upon the Federal Poverty guidelines. The Eric B. Chandler Health Center provides a telephone on-call rotation of physicians available 24 hours a day.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Medical Services Assistant for Nursing in Eric B. Chandler Health Center at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The Medical Services Assistant performs administrative and clinical tasks as assigned to support effective and efficient office operations. As directed by the physician, administers intramuscular and subcutaneous injections in limited circumstances which maybe delegated under the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners regulations.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • After demonstrating competency, performs and documents patient care-related tasks as assigned by the registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, and/or physician. These may include but are not limited to: pre-visit chart review and retrieval of missing documents; preparing exam room for the office visit, including monitoring of supplies and expiration dates; preparing the patient for the exam; obtaining and documenting reason for the visit; vital signs; medication reconciliation and allergy review; smoking and immunization histories; performing and documenting Point of Care Testing including running a urinalysis, blood glucose finger stick; fecal occult blood and urine pregnancy test; maintaining test supplies, temperature of room, refrigerator and freezer
    where supplies are kept running quality controls, and maintaining logs for Point of Care Testing; performing vision and hearing screening; performing EKGs; session set-up and close; office procedure set up; maintaining clinical/office equipment/supply inventory; maintaining/cleaning clinical/office equipment and exam rooms as required.
  • Under the direction and supervision of the physician and other providers, administers intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections in limited circumstances as outlined in the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners regulations; accurately and completely documents medication administration in the medical record.
  • After demonstrating competency, performs and documents patient communication-related tasks as assigned by the registered
    nurse, license practical nurse, and/or physician. These may include but are not limited to: conducting, obtaining, documenting, and relaying medication, test, and procedure pre -authorizations as appropriate; accepting, retrieving, and routing phone calls and phone messages from the office nurse line; inputting medication refill requests according to policies and protocols; relaying
    normal test results to the patient or reading results verbatim from the physician documentation and consulting an RN, LPN, or physician should the patient have question regarding their results.
  • Provides input to the plan of care by communicating information pertinent to the patient’s status to the registered nurse and other members of the health care team as appropriate and in a timely manner.
  • Engages in ongoing performance improvement activities to enhance the quality and effectiveness of one’s practice as a Medical Services Assistant, and that of the Eric B. Chandler Health Center organizational system.
  • Engages in continuing education to attain knowledge and competency that reflects the current state of ambulatory patient care and that will enable the Medical Services Assistant to contribute to the Eric B. Chandler Health Center mission as it relates to the delivery of quality health care, as well as fulfill CMA certification CE requirement.
  • Fosters an environment that nurtures collaboration, teamwork, and mutual respect through effective communication as demonstrated by positive relationships with patients, family members/caregivers, Eric B. Chandler Health Center staff, and other members of the health care team to ensure the delivery of health care that is safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and
    patient-centered.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Meets the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners definition of a “certified medical assistant” as outlined in NJAC 13:35-6.4(a)2.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Applicants may be licensed in the State of New Jersey in another classification permitted by regulations to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
  • Must have demonstrated competency in the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques.
  • At least one (1) year of relevant experience required, preferably in a medical office setting.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • The ability to function in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated competency in basic word processing and computer skills.
  • Able to travel to provide coverage at “off-site” practices as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated competency in Point of Care Testing.
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish); completion of medical interpreter training course.
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Record system; EPIC.

  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires standing to 2/3 of the time, walking 2/3 of the time, requires sitting to 2/3 of the time use of the hands to finger, handle or feel to 2/3 of the time, reach with hands and arms over 1/3 of the time, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl under 1/3 of the time, talk to hear over 2/3 of the time. Position requires lifting 1/3 of the time up to 10 pounds, and under 1/3 of the time up to 25 pounds.

  • WORK ENVIRONMENT: Moderate noise environment with some exposure (less than 1/3 of the time) to blood borne pathogen requiring the use of personal protective equipment; some potential exposure (less than 1/3 of the time) to hazardous waste.
