Job Summary

The Bronchoscopy Service is an administrative unit of the Adult Pulmonary Laboratories, CVRI and the Pulmonary and Critical Care Division.  It provides the equipment, supplies, and trained technical personnel to assist the Pulmonary Attending Physicians when they perform bronchoscopies.  These procedures may be conducted as part of the clinical evaluation and/or treatment of patients seen on the Inpatient Consult Service, the Lung Transplant Service, the Interventional Pulmonology Medicine Service, or from the Chest Faculty Practice.  These procedures are also conducted as part of certain clinical research protocols carried out by the Pulmonary Attending Physicians.  The service also provides training for Pulmonary Fellows during their rotations on the Pulmonary Service at Moffitt-Long Hospitals.

The HLT-3 Lead Bronchoscopy Technician position will be a key leadership role on the Bronchoscopy Services team. The Lead Bronchoscopy Technician will have demonstrated mastery of Bronchoscopy Technician skills. The HLT-3 role has a focus on specialized training for the Technician in the Interventional Pulmonology program, as well as administrative tasks, such as being a point of contact for IP Service Representatives or overseeing the schedule for the department. This position will also empower the Technician to assume a lead role for their team when the Manager is not available.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The primary mission of the Cardiovascular Research Institute, the largest organized research unit on the San Francisco campus, is to promote fundamental and clinical research on the cardiovascular and pulmonary respiratory systems and to provide opportunities for postdoctoral training in these fields. With over 200 faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows, the CVRI supports faculty from a variety of departments (Medicine, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Lab Medicine, Pediatrics, Anatomy, Anesthesia, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Physiology, Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology). The total extramural funding is $34 million annually (direct and indirect costs), with $1M in indirect cost return, and $561K in State funds. Assets include $38 million in endowment income and gifts, $3M in clinical reserves, and $5.8M in opportunity funds.


Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from college with a major in an applicable natural science plus two years of experience in the kind of work to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Prior experience working with (extremely ill) patients in a hospital or clinic setting
  • Maintain CPR proficiency, environmental health and safety training, HIPAA training.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of people, including (extremely ill) patients
  • Ability to perform local anesthesia to patients
  • Ability to assist with handling biopsy forceps, brushes, and biopsy needles
  • Ability to push a heavy cart containing equipment and supplies
  • Able to communicate effectively with patients and be sensitive to their needs
  • Ability to work closely with other employees
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems independently and in a team setting
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to adapt to multiple demands/high volume work environment
