Position Highlights As part of NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission, the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory of the University of Arizona (https://www.lpl.arizona.edu) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in the field of isotope cosmochemistry to support isotopic analysis of returned samples from asteroid Bennu. The successful applicant will work closely with Dr. Pierre Haenecour and Dr. Jessica Barnes and join the planetary materials research group (https://www.lpl.arizona.edu/PMRG/). The initial appointment is for one year with expected renewal up to two years, pending funding and satisfactory performance. The position is expected to begin July of 2023.

The postdoctoral candidate will have access to all state-of-the-art ion- and electron- microscopes in the University of Arizona Kuiper Materials Imaging and Characterization Facility (https://kmicf.lpl.arizona.edu). Techniques include nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron microprobe analysis (EPMA), focused-ion beam scanning-electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Duties & Responsibilities

In coordination with Dr. Pierre Haenecour and Dr. Jessica Barnes, the successful applicant will primarily work on NanoSIMS measurements of samples from asteroid Bennu that are being returned by the UA-led NASA OSIRIS-REx mission. The work will include in-situ isotopic analysis of matrix, carbonates, presolar grains and organic matter. The applicant must be able to work well independently and as part of a group that includes undergraduate and graduate students, as well as staff members.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in one of the physical sciences or engineering, (e.g., Chemistry, Physics, Geological Sciences, Materials Science, and Engineering) completed upon hire. 
  • Demonstrated experience and advanced knowledge in Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) is required.
  • Prior experience presenting research results at international conferences and in refereed journal publications is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience handling and analysis of planetary materials would be preferred.
  • Experience with NanoSIMS is preferred.
