Postdoctoral Research Associate

Princeton University

Job Description

The Kingsbury group in the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment at Princeton University is seeking applications for a postdoctoral research associate or more senior research position. The Kingsbury group examines fundamental aspects of engineered, ion selective materials used in electrochemical processes for separation, energy conversion, and energy storage. The researcher will participate in a large, multi-stakeholder project team that includes members from a national laboratory and private industry. The project seeks to develop an electrochemical mineralization process to produce sustainable building materials by sequestering atmospheric CO2. This position is heavily weighted toward computational research. The primary research tasks will involve 1) identifying mineral phases that may precipitate from complex aqueous electrolytes at different values of pH and applied potential and 2) estimating the precipitation kinetics of those phases. This work is expected to involve density functional theory (DFT) calculations of solid materials and surfaces as well as construction of pH-pE (Pourbaix) diagrams from the resulting data. The project requires applicants to have a strong background in thermodynamics and prior experience with DFT calculations. Familiarity with the open-source software and methods used by the Materials Project, application of Pourbaix diagrams to phase stability research, and VASP software would be ideal. Individuals with expertise in computational materials science or electrochemistry research and a PhD in relevant fields (including materials science, electrochemistry, chemical engineering, or environmental engineering) are encouraged to apply. All candidates must have strong, demonstrated research ability, be very comfortable in an interdisciplinary research environment, and have excellent English language verbal and written communication skills. We are interested in receiving applications from members of groups that have been historically underrepresented in engineering and materials science. The appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of an additional year renewal, contingent on performance and funding. Inquiries about the position may be sent to kingsbury@princeton.edu Applicants must apply online at https://puwebp.princeton.edu/AcadHire/position/29163 and submit a CV, cover letter, and contact information for three references. The candidate is subject to the University's background check policy. Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
