RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Disability Services represent SMCC and its policies and programs to various individuals and groups: perspective students and their parents/guardians, current students, educators and college faculty, and external organizations. It includes analyzing and determining student eligibility for ADA services at the higher education level and designing, administering, implementing, and evaluation programs that serve all parties involved. This position includes analysis of documentation for eligibility determination. It also includes the formulation and communication of accommodation plans to all parties concerned (students, faculty, student affairs staff when appropriate) on a semester by semester basis (for academic accommodations). In doing so this person will ensure reasonable access to college programs and services. This position will include carrying (in collaboration with other office members) a load of students advisees with whom ongoing communication and availability for meetings, when requested by the students, is accomplished thereby providing informed student support in academic and college life activities and goals. Finally the Director is responsible for the training, supervision and evaluation of 1-2 Disability Services Coordinators who provide disability services to students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Baccalaureate degree in education, special education, or related field from an accredited college or university OR comparable experience in both ADA related work with students as well as administrative and/or leadership experience.

PREFERRED QULIFICATIONS: A minimum of three years’ experience in a secondary or higher setting working with students with disabilities. Demonstrated knowledge of strategies for assessing and supporting the academic needs of students with disabilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

· Excellent written and oral communication skills

· Ability to train and supervise staff member(s) on law, policies, and procedures regarding students with disabilities. Ability to divided and assign case load among office staff.

· Ability to prioritize numerous tasks, shift easily among them, and to attend to details.

· Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision

· Demonstrated computer literacy including Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and Power Point, ability to learn and effectively use the college’s Learning Management System.

· Knowledge of assistive technologies or software, including apps, or tools to include voice recognition programs, screen readers, screen enlargement applications, notetaking support, recording devices, screen readers and enlargement applications, cognitive/memory aids , etc.

· Knowledge of strategies for use with students needing support in managing executive function skills, time/life management, reading comprehension, writing, textbook management and other academic skills and strategies needed for a successful college performance.
