Background: The Research Scientist will have access to world-class electron- and ion-beam instrumentation and the opportunity to work in a dynamic research environment. The KMICF will figure prominently in the analysis of samples to be returned from asteroid Bennu by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx Mission (https://www.asteroidmission.org), and so the successful candidate will have an opportunity to participate directly in measurements of the returned sample. The successful candidate will be a highly organized individual with knowledge of electron and ion-beam instrumentation and laboratory practices. A professional demeanor and demonstrated interpersonal skills are required for working with all levels of users including students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, other staff scientists, their guests, and visitors, as well as the public.

• Operate and maintain CAMECA nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometer.
• Be responsible for equipment troubleshooting and performing or coordinating instrument maintenance, service, and repair.
• Manage instrument scheduling, maintain lab records (including data archiving), submit monthly billing, and order routine operational supplies.
• Be responsible for establishing and monitoring compliance with safe operating procedures within the lab as per University regulations.
• Organize individual or group training sessions and certify new users for safe and proper instrument use, which may also include organizing and running user workshops.
• Help oversee user operation of facility sample-preparation equipment.
• Collaborate with users (faculty and students) on new experiments, data interpretation, publications, and grant proposals (where appropriate).
• Regularly perform oral and/or written communication of results to users, instrument scientist, and/or facility oversight committee.
• Recommend lab and/or instrument upgrades.
• Keep abreast of new developments in the field, updates skills, seeks/recommends supplemental training to advance knowledge and facility capabilities.
• Perform other tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

• Fundamental knowledge on the operating characteristics of mass spectrometers, vacuum systems, and data storage.
• Excellent oral/written communication in English and superior organization skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required.

• Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Science, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or related field with strong isotope geo/cosmochemistry background.
• Minimum of 2 years of laboratory-management experience.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in independent operation of NanoSIMS including experience with trouble shooting and instrument maintenance is encouraged.
• Proven independent experience with ion mass spectrometers (NanoSIMS, SIMS or SHRIMP).
• Demonstrated track record in research using such instrumentation.
