Space System Architecture Engineer - US Space Force

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Do you love to build impactful software tools?

Are you searching for important work in end to end system development?

Are you passionate about making a difference early on in system development?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC, is seeking an Applied Software Engineer for Space Systems and Space Science Applications to help us architect, integrate and implement complex space systems to support the United States Space Force.

As a Space System Architecture Engineer, your tasks and responsibilities will include researching, documenting, and instantiating space system and multi-domain architectures for the space control mission area, use of various Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) tools (such as Enterprise Architect, Cameo, etc…) to document and enable the acquisition and operationalization of system architectures in support of space control mission areas.

  • Develop algorithms, maintain repositories, and integrate simulations for space and related ground support systems. Design routines, as needed, to enable simulations of complex space and ground architectures, systems, and object and sensor interactions.
  • Design and execute trade studies and analysis of alternatives for space systems and space system protection.
  • Adapt mathematical algorithms/techniques to analyze performance in end-to-end space systems, disseminate results through presentations and publications.
  • Communicate effectively to various USG sponsors in order to gather information, relay results of task activities, enable synergistic execution of tasks, and to propose/develop new lines of effort.

As a member of our team, you’ll help APL make critical contributions to a broad scope of physics, software, engineering, and systems integration problems.  You’ll be joining a team of scientists and engineers who are passionate about the design, fielding, and testing of operational systems. Our team is committed to getting the right answers for the nation and ensuring that capability not only meets requirements, but meets the mission need end to end.  We strive to foster an environment of collaboration and sound engineering practices and our team values both experienced system engineering and the application of fresh ideas and concepts in solving complex challenges.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a BS in engineering, physical sciences, computer science, mathematics or related field
  • Have 2+ years of experience and skill in software engineering of complex systems and problems including high performance computing and problem-solution scalability
  • Are skilled in object oriented C++ and/or Java programming in a multi-programmer/user environment. Experience with physics or mathematical simulation and problem solving. Previous experience with MBSE-associated tools/software, and previous space control system architecture design and implementation. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Working knowledge of software design best practices and model based systems engineering approaches.
  • Are willing and able to travel to work with diverse teams across the country.
  • Are able to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have a PhD in engineering, physical sciences, or mathematics. Can demonstrate versatility and ability to tackle diverse problems from inception through completion with minimal supervision.
  • Possess working knowledge of current and planned space and ground support systems.
  • Are currently TS//SCI cleared, and have or have had SAP clearances.
  • Have familiarity with source control repository management. Demonstrated command of physics or mathematical simulation and problem solving in particular in the areas of space flight dynamics, spacecraft design and/or space materials.
