Reporting directly to the Director, this position will lead the both the Hayes Family Sculpture Park and the new Raclin Murphy Museum of Art and its Collections Management, Exhibition, and Visitors Services staff teams. Phase I of the new museum is under construction and scheduled to open in November 2023. They will be based in the new Museum and the focus of their responsibilities are the care and presentation of the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions in its galleries, and the outdoor sculpture collection and park site. They will serve as the primary administrative point person for the new facility both within the larger museum organization, to university departments and outside contractors. Proven ability to work in a leadership role directing multiple disciplines is a must. They will help implement the Museum’s artistic vision, policies, and community connections with great sensitivity towards embracing and expanding the institution’s DEAI framework. The Associate Director will represent the Museum Director in their absence as requested, represent the organization to the Advisory Council and university and community committees as assigned, and serve on the Collections and Exhibitions Committee in a leadership capacity, and the Acquisitions Committee. Previous experience working with donors and a board/advisory council is a must. A strong level of comfort and experience engaging with the public are important. Must be able to work in a developing, increasingly fast-paced environment. The understanding of museum specific software systems and equipment is greatly advantageous. While the Associate Director may or may not be a person of faith s/he must wish to support the mission of the University of Notre Dame as a Catholic research university.
Minimum Qualifications
- A BA degree in Studio Art, Art History, or Museum Studies, with minimum of fifteen years professional experience in Museums and Sculpture Parks with evidence of successful professional and supervisory advancement.
- Must be a seasoned museum professional with additional, unique experience related to the sculpture parks and public art. Experience with opening a new facility is preferred.
- Must understand how a museum works within an academy and supports the local community and larger arts profession.
- Significant budget development and broad supervisory knowledge and experience are required.
- Must have proven experience with exhibition and collection design and implementation, the ability to oversee and realize special projects frequently in conjunction with artists, artist representatives, construction and specialist contractors.
- Have an understanding of museum specific software systems and equipment is greatly advantageous. They must support the mission of the University of Notre Dame as a Catholic research university and the Museum’s developing DEAI framework, with sensitivity to the people and communities of the Michiana region.
