Job Summary

Over 2,500 children undergo hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (bone marrow transplantation) each year as treatment for life-threatening diseases such as cancer, primary immunodeficiencies, and hemoglobinopathies. These patients are at high risk for life-threatening complications including lung injury, infection, and multi-organ failure. UCSF is a leader in pediatric stem cell transplantation and is committed to improving the care of these children through scientific research. In order to learn more about lung injury in children, we are conducting a number of translational research studies involving human biological samples collected from these patients. Our goal is to analyze bulk- and single-cell DNA, RNA, and protein expression in these patient samples and correlate our findings with patient characteristics and outcomes.  We aim to improve our understanding of lung diseases in children and form hypotheses that could alter our approach to diagnosis and treatment. We expect to identify both previously unrecognized infectious pathogens as well as patterns of destructive inflammation in our patients that are associated with poor clinical outcomes.

This Staff Research Associate (SRA) will work in the laboratory of Dr. Zinter, Assistant Professor in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, and Dr. DeRisi, Professor of Biochemistry & Biophysics and Co-President of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub.  The laboratory is located at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus and is adjacent to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital and the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub.  The ideal candidate for this position will be interested in helping critically ill children and will be trained in basic laboratory techniques including an ultra-sterile approach to nucleic acid extraction, PCR, ELISA, and quantification & purification methods. Meticulous precision, technical accuracy, reliability, and a willingness to learn are of the utmost importance. The ideal candidate will be interested in attending graduate or medical school and will benefit from being in a large vibrant laboratory group of technicians, graduate students, postdoctoral scientists, and physicians.  The candidate is expected to assist with data presentations for laboratory meetings and with the generation of scientific manuscripts.  Biostatistics and bioinformatics training may be very useful but are not required.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest and most complex departments in the School of Medicine (SOM). The department ranks 17th in the nation among Pediatric departments for funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The department is comprised of 17 divisions, with clinical income form inpatient and outpatient activities totaling over $90 million dollars in charges and annual extramural funding (contracts and grants) exceeding $40 million. The Department’s mission includes research (both basic and clinical), education, patient care and public service. The Department’s clinical enterprise is based at the 183-bed UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco, the 191-bed UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, Mount Zion, Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG), and at a number of outreach clinics throughout Northern California, providing the Department with unsurpassed opportunity to meet the needs of infants, children, and young adults throughout the Bay Area. Required Qualifications

SRA I

•  BA/BS in biology or chemistry or a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Willingness to work with human biological samples
• Knowledge of scientific equipment (centrifuge, pipettes, ultra-low freezers)  
• Strong computer skills including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize
• Excellent communication skills
• Flexible schedule – ability to work evenings and weekends
• Meticulous record keeping abilities

• BA/BS degree in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Generally experienced in the described job duties and in the principles and practices associated with those duties with an understanding of the underlying scientific principles.
• Ability to draft routine reports and keep accurate records of work performed.
• Actively seeks opportunities to increase skills and expertise.
• Able to learn complex tasks with general instruction.  Able to use experience to perform a variety of new techniques.
