Job Summary

Under supervision, the Staff Research Associate typically performs a wide variety of standard repetitive procedures without detailed technical supervision, usually in a well-established occupational field (i.e., chemistry, microbiology, etc.). They may also modify, vary or adapt standard procedures to meet the needs of research projects, or improve tests that are unsatisfactory, and after studying available literature, analyze and alter conditions under which determinations are made.
The Division of Cardiology is building an internal Biorepository (Cardiology Research Biorepository – CRB) for tissue, blood, plasma, saliva, and more. This position is new to the Division and is being created to support the renowned physicians performing research in the Division of Cardiology. Under the supervision of the CRB lab manager, the Staff Research Associate will assist with lab set up and design, facilitating and implementing Investigator Initiated research protocols, and eventually assisting with collection and processing of clinical research lab samples to be sent to central lab facilities. The primary location will be the Parnassus Heights Campus, but may include some work at the Mission Bay Cardiovascular Research Building. The incumbent will demonstrate excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Division of Cardiology is one of the largest clinical, research and training divisions of the Department of Medicine (DOM) at UCSF. Within the Division are sub-specialty sections for: Adult Congenital Heart Disease; Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant, and Pulmonary Hypertension; Cardiac Electrophysiology; Echocardiography and Cardiac Imaging; General Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology; and Prevention. The Division runs several clinical practices in multiple sites, conducts basic and clinical research, and educates medical students, residents, clinical fellows and postdoctoral scholars through ACGME as well as non-ACGME training programs.

In addition, the Division has large patient care programs in the sections noted above, large clinical, Federal, and privately supported research programs and six faculty laboratories. The Division has 70 full-time faculty, 7 non-faculty academics, 36 clinical fellows, 6 post-doctoral research fellows, and over 80 research support and administrative staff. While the Division is primarily split between the Parnassus and Mission Bay campuses, fellows have rotations at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center.


Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in biology, or related science and/or 1+ or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Laboratory experience with DNA extractions for PCR and genotyping
  • General cell culture experience or coursework (tissue processing, preparation of plates and cell maintenance)
  • General basic histology experience or coursework (tissue handling, preparation of slides and slide staining)
  • Direct knowledge of scientific equipment (centrifuge, pipettes, microscopes, thermo-cycler)
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Word, and the ability to analyze spreadsheets.
  • Excellent attention to detail, good writing and communication skills, and the ability to work efficiently with limited supervision.
  • Desire to learn new techniques and skills, and the flexibility to move between multiple projects.
