Job Title:
Post Doctoral Scholar

Department:
Arts and Sciences | Chemistry and Biochemistry Administration

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry within the College of Arts and Sciences, seeks a Post Doctoral Scholar to perform independent research in exploring tiny RNAs in humans at the Nakanishi lab (http://u.osu.edu/nakanishilab/). Tiny RNAs, 10 - 18 nucleotide non-coding RNAs, were found to be associated with Argonaute proteins, like microRNAs, but their physiological functions remain to be studied. For instance, while more than 200,000 papers about microRNAs have been reported, only about 10 papers have reported about tiny RNAs. We are looking for a highly motivated Post Doctoral Scholar who explores the world of tiny RNAs together. Responsibilities consist of expressing the gene of recombinant proteins in insect cells, mammalian cells, and E. coli cells, purifying the proteins using FPLC systems, transcribing RNAs in vitro, labeling the RNAs, performing in vitro assays using the purified proteins and RNAs, and preparing for structure determination using cryo-EM and X-ray crystallography. The Post Doctoral Scholar will be trained by the current lab members in our methods of culturing insect and mammalian cells and of purifying proteins and RNAs. The Post Doctoral Scholar will participate in weekly meetings with the supervisor, write progress reports every two weeks, attend lab seminars, and prepare manuscripts and grant applications.

Qualifications:

Doctoral Degree in molecular biology and biochemistry with specialization in structural biology or related area required. Demonstrated experience in protein purification required.  Candidates who have experience in using cryo-EM and/or confocal microscope are strongly encouraged to apply. Research interest in non-coding RNAs desired.  Strong software skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (or Keynote) desired.
