Description of Duties and Tasks

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Provides campus leadership, vision and integrity for Student Accessibility Services (SAS) and Student Advocacy Center (SAC).
  • Directs day-to-day business of campus SAS and Support Center offices, providing services to students with disabilities and/or economically and academically challenged students.
  • Determines eligibility for Support Center services.
  • Approves appropriate and reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Provides counseling for SAC-eligible students, either individually or in groups, including career and educational planning, decision making, values clarification, and understanding and overcoming barriers to academic success.
  • May provide academic counseling and advising, including course selection, degree planning, review of transfer information, and determination of ultimate employment objectives.
  • Analyzes information about individuals through interviews, assessments, and records, including disability documentation to appraise their interests, abilities, and potential barriers to academic success.
  • Provides case management services through on-going contact and follow up with students, and coordinates referrals to college and community services as needed.
  • Serves as liaison between childcare provider, student, and ACC to insure payments and contracts are being fulfilled.
  • Selects and recommends textbooks to be purchased for the SAC textbook collection.
  • Gathers and updates data, analyzes, and incorporates data in working on solutions for students to improve case management.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of student accommodations in the educational process.  Also monitors academic progress of SAS and SAC students, and intervenes when appropriate or when improvement is needed.
  • Collaborates with external stakeholders including school districts, high school transition programs, disability related state agencies, and state employment agencies in order to create effective and efficient processes for student recruitment, retention, and placement.
  • Maintains collaborative and consultative relationships with internal stakeholders at Austin Community College including faculty and staff.
  • Participates in program planning, development, and documentation. Supports the development, review and revision of written policies, guidelines and procedures for SAS and SAC.

Knowledge
Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • College admissions requirements, programs, and courses.
  • Standardized testing procedures and assessment techniques.
  • Multicultural education programs and systems.
  • Program strategies to support student success for low income, minority and under-resourced students.
  • Vocational rehabilitation and disability services practices and strategies.
  • Counseling and advising techniques.
  • Laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to students with disabilities, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Vocational Rehabilitation Act, Section 504, and accessibility techniques including Universal Design.
  • Inside Track Coaching training and certification.
  • Texas Health and Human Services Navigator Training and Certification to complete SNAP, TANF and Medicaid applications.
  • Signal Vine texting.
  • Central Health Insurance eligibility training.

Skills
Must possess required skills and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Maintaining an established work schedule.
  • Effectively using interpersonal and communications skills including tact and diplomacy.
  • Effectively using organizational and planning skill, including attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Effectively working with a diverse student population.
  • Counseling and advising students on program guidelines and requirements.
  • Assessing student needs and providing appropriate resources and/or referrals.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of work-related information and materials.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Technology Skills
  • Use a variety of spreadsheet, word processing, database, and presentation software.

Required Work Experience
  • Two years related work experience.

Preferred Work Experience
  • Two years related experience working with people with disabilities or economically disadvantages people in a variety of settings, including higher education.

Required Education
  • Master's degree.

Preferred Education
  • Master's degree in Vocational Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, or a closely related field.

Other Preferred Qualifications
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW).

Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed in a standard office environment.
  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 10 pounds.

Safety
  • Work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.

Salary Range

$49,205 - $61,506
